Maybe there should be some chance for the armies to bump into each other on the way if they are not allies.
Otherwise we can be going back and forth as we don't know the movement beforehand. It's battles we want most after all. Not sieges even if that's ok too.
I had already planned to flip a coin in that case. The winner of the coin flip will fight the dag battle on the losers province. So in your example, say Lorrain and Luxemburg each send an army to the others province. Luxemburg wins the coin flip. The battle will be fought in Lorraine province, if Lorrain wins, Luxemburg must retreat and go back to Luxemburg. If Luxemburg wins the battle, Lorrain will have to eithe retreat from the province, or retreat into its province castle.
While this puts a slight advantage on the winner of the flip, I think it fits well and gives a bit of realism, as one army might have been moving faster etc.
