A new Samurai question after my first tourny in 30 years.

Post by irondog068 »

Okay played in a tourny had fun, one highest scoring 28mm Asain army (only one) and paced 5 out of 10. I had a real hard time fighting Romans with my list (Split with a 2 Late Republic arimes but the second battle the only high note is I lasted the whole 2 hours, and a Mid Republic Roman Which went bad for the Romans on the first shooting phase and just got worse).
My Army was:
1xFC
3xTC
1x8 Bushi: Med, Armored, average, undrilled, BW*, HW
5x6 Bushi: Same as above
1x6 Ashigaru w/Yari: Med, Protected, average, undrilled, Offensiive spear
1x4 Samurai: Cav, Armored, Sup, Undrilled, Bw Swords

Found Cav useless and going against legions found my infantry almost so. Did good against Asian troops but not walking tanks.
15mm: Swiss, Spartans, Late Republic Romans, EIR Romans, and can you believe it Samurai. 800 points
28mm: Late Republic Romans 650 points
28mm: Samurai 800 points

It is not easy for your army to face 'full fat' Romans. The skilled swordsman is a bit of a killer for you as it negates your HW :(

To be honest against Romans if you use the cavalry in single rank and evade when charged they should be able to keep one or even two BGs of Romans 'honest'.

Other than that your armies only saving grace against legionaries is that you can fight perfectly well in terrain and they can't.

Having much effect with Bw* on legionaries is a bit of a long shot.

Overall I think the army is fine but if you are lilely to face Romans on a regular basis I am not sure what you can do to best them :(

My experience with this army was that apart from skilled swordsmen (mysteriously I seemed to see more of those in one weekend than every other comp I've played in) they are also very vulnerable to Lance armed cavalry. Having your own cavalry and the associated spearmen may provide a counter to this.

So if I drop some Bushi and Samurai Cav and 1 TC and add

2x6 Samurai: MF/Sup/Arm/undrilled/Off Spear
And the requierd 2x6 Ashigaru with Yari: MF/Avg/undrilled/Off spear.

And possibly adding a Ashigaru with BW: MF/Arm or protected/Avg/undrilled/Bw
15mm: Swiss, Spartans, Late Republic Romans, EIR Romans, and can you believe it Samurai. 800 points
28mm: Late Republic Romans 650 points
28mm: Samurai 800 points
