FoG:R - Pictures wanted for army list books

Post by nikgaukroger »

We are now in the process of producing the Field of Glory Renaissance rule set and accompanying Army Lists. Photos for the rules and the 1st two army lists have now been completed and we are now looking for photos for the 3rd Book of lists, working title Clash of Empires!

We are therefore looking for excellent quality colour photos of suitable well painted figures from your collections (15, 20 or 25mm - and even 40mm for Clash of Empires. Only the best will be selected!

The actual armies in the book and the dates covered by each list are set out below.

The technical bit is that the photos need to be of a print standard of at least 300DPI. Really all this means is that you need to set your camera to a fine or high setting, and the pictures should be taken in natural day light. The standard for print advertising is much higher than that for publication on the web! Our rule of thumb is that anything over 1 meg as a JPEG, for example, should be useable.

All of the picture needs to be in focus and please think about the background - a plain background is fine but not the whitewashed wall of the club house please :-) Also check the figures closely as bent spears, flaky paint or bases in need of repair really stand out and are the biggest reasons we have to pass on some otherwise great photos!

During production of previous army lists for FoG Ancients we have found that single figures are the most effective for illustrating lists (as opposed to the rule books) and that while some groups or battle scenes add colour we really prefer single figures - the standard single based figure you typically see in figure manufactures adverts in the glossy magazines for advertising (against a neutral background) is the kind of thing we need. By the way personality figures representing actual generals always go down well!

Bases etc do not have to be FoG compliant, we want to show the highest quality photos to inspire gamers! It is important that you label each photo with the subject matter - whilst our photo team are pretty good they won't necessarily recognise what your photo is of. They can tell a Turk from a Pole but wouldn't necessarily know the name of every early C17th Austrian unit :-)

Obviously full credit for the source will be given in the army list book.

We need the pictures by 15th May!

Our photo team are happy to help with any questions or queries on technical details, composition, suitable subject matter etc.

The armies we are looking at this time are (16th century, unless marked * which are 17th century as well):

Ottoman Turk *
Knights of St John
Hungarian
Wallachian, Moldavian and Transylvanian
Tartar *
Mamluk Egyptian
Anatolian emirates
White Sheep Turk
Safavid Persian *
Imperial Austrian
Venetian Colonial
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth * (to end of Thirty Years War)
Swedish * (pre Thirty years War)
Cossack *
Russian *
Early Danish
Scandinavian Union
Early Polish

First book covers the first half of the 17th century in western and central Europe - i.e. The Thirty Years War, English civil War etc.

Second book covers the 16th century in western and central Europe - i.e. The Italian Wars, French Wars of Religion, Early 80 Years War, English wars in Scotland and Ireland etc. etc.
