Have you read the news? The country barely exists!dave_r wrote:To be honest, the organistation has been little short of shambolic. We don't know who is playing, we don't know how many people are playing, there aren't any directions to the venue, there are no maps, there have been no "preferred rates" for any hotels nearby. All of which we have come to expect.
OK Sorry to my greek friends, I know it is tough times. Dave surely you will find your way and it will be fun and you will lose in a dust storm.

I think it is more that not many people were that keen on another trip to Athens when they were mostly feeling poor and many had already been to Athens only a few years ago.
Personally I am in the middle of making plans for Wellington 2011. New Zealand has been on my list of places I really want to go to so this year I am mainly looking to save money. That and the fact I am not a big fan of open tournaments any more.

Assuming the web site is up to date of course ...
However, it is indeed a far cry from previous European WICs, but to some degree I am unsurprised given the current economic situation. I'd have gone, however, facing redundancy ...

Not having had paid employment for two years now it would have meant raiding my savings and having already been to Athens I would rather spend what I have on going somewhere else.
I am sure that those who attend will have a great time (unless Phil bumps into that 'woman' again
