I ran a campaign a little bit like this quite a few years ago and we used a map that had 'nodes' and lines of travel between them. Eventually it got fleshed out into a geographical map, but the initial abstract worked well and encouraged/discouraged alliances between certain players.petergarnett wrote:I do know that a geo map is in favour with many of you and Scar has kindly offered to manage that part but for the first year we are keeping it abstract. After that if the vote is for a map I'll randomly place each of your countries working with Scar.
Finally your capital area can not be attacked unless it is the one area which you have left - this prevents swamping a player with attacks & knocking him out. Also each area may only have one active campaign at any point.

Seemed to me you want to know a few places won't attack you. That was priority one with alliances.hidde wrote:I'm a bit at loss as to how I choose my allies and why. I have alliances with a couple of nations I know to be ruled by strong players. What else is there to base your offers on?
I conclude by reading some of the declamations in this thread and by the ease wich some players act "in character" that you must have done this sort of stuff before![]()
I'm totally new to this...
If you know, or have battled with someone here, maybe that can lead to more likely to plan with each other. I only know a few names here from games. If you can get a small core of allies who will mutually not attack and also go to war against someone who attacks you, then you are about as safe as you can get in this thing!
I would think you could still attack if you wanted to. The longer you wait in a "season" just means you may have less turns to complete the campaign. In other words, if you attack>battle>continue to battle>...the season may end and you go into the next and will have to pay maintenance on your army.
Also seems to me, if you are attacked, you should probably counter-attack if you can afford it. Makes the dude think again about fighting you, and, if he's successful against you and you against him, you have something to deal with.

I too am new to this, and it is quite fun, but not necasary to be in any kind of charactor... also beware a lot of intrigue is going on behind the scenes via PM's, just how much is really unknown...hidde wrote:I think I start to "get" the mechanisms for play now. That's what I want to ask about. With regard to geography, relations between all nations are the same. I'm a bit at loss as to how I choose my allies and why. I have alliances with a couple of nations I know to be ruled by strong players. What else is there to base your offers on?

Now I drape my toga on:
Rome asks you to consider the folly of your words regarding strong rulers. As no offers of peacefull coexistance have been forthcoming from from your diplomats, are we to assume you consider us weak and not worthy of your friendship? Tread with care, SPQR

Hidden alliances, deals, oaths, conspiracies, back-stabbing is what makes the campaign fun!
We have already had money exchange hands in an honourable but hidden fashion
I still don't have the army spend from some of you who are at war. Also Morbio & Xiccarph are being invaded & need to select their area to defend in.
National morale - everone starts in the Amber zone which is kinda neutral but each of you varies slightly as to the exact point on the scale.
Sorry there was no Improve phase in Spring - in the Summer phase we'll do one with a rapid build (so in time for Fall tax) as a one off.
Some of you have named your areas which adds to the fun. I'll pass these names to Scar for his map update plus the one change of ownership so far. More area names would be welcomed.
Please note that I'll be away Tues, Weds, Thurs but nothing after that for awhile.

Yes, that's what I thought but afraid I missed something.Seemed to me you want to know a few places won't attack you. That was priority one with alliances.
I wish it was so..I have no internet conection good enough for play untill the 14:thI would think you could still attack if you wanted to
Did I hear someone accuse ME, Ruler of Canaan, Vanquisher of nations of folly?
Some upstart ruler of an insignificant city along the shores of some Italian river do wisely in choosing his words carefully or my wrath will know no bounds. (After 14/4, that is..)

It seems that the outbreak of norovirus is still raging in Utopia, much of the army has been laid low.
As yet, no Utopian army has been sighted in Kappadokia.
Unless it is a trick to get us to relax our vigilance.
I warn the Utopians that attempts to spread this plague inside Kappadokia are doomed to failure. Our people have rendered themselves immune to all gastrointestinal diseases by eating a small amount of human faeces every day.
(It's an acquired taste).
Mithridates
PS And don't bother trying to poison us either.
Provinces of Kappadokia:
7 Capital: Sinope
6 2nd city (and port): Amisus
5: Pharnacia
4: Cabira
3: Comana
2: Amasia
1: Colchis

It has come to our attention that various nations have begun unrestricted hunting of Panthers. The Roman people have always enjoyed the wearing of exotic animal pelts and cannot fathom that that their pleasures will be interrupted by the extinction of such a species. Rome calls upon all nations that can excersize responsible hunting practices to put an end to the slaughter by whatever means needed. What say you? SPQR

Newest Map
The map is coming along as I get more province names. Everyones capital is the one closest to their country name. Several players have given me port cities, but I don't think those are being used. If they are, please let me know and I will go back and add an indicator on which is a port. Also I plan to add an indicator when a city is built in a province.

-The Colossus of Rhodes- Gigantic statue of the sun god Helios, standing proudly astride the entrance to the harbour city of the Greek island of Rhodes. 70 cubits high, gleaming bronze in the sun. Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
A travelling sailor from Texas gazes up at the majestic statue. Tilting his ten gallon hat to shade his eyes from the blazing mediterranean sun, he announces, "Nice little figurine you have there buddy. You should come and see the bigger one we have back in Texas..."
Meanwhile, Ianhotep I (The Undying One) sits in his sarcoph....err on his throne, gazing into the seeing stone and muses about the phrase "Everything is bigger in Texas", perhaps this applies to their treasury too..
"Prepare the Pirat...err Royal fleet", we sail to war!
Mwuhahahahaha. MwUhahahahahaaaaa
(edit: spelling errors - the scribe has been fed to a swarm of flesh eating scarab beetles.
(Rhodes attacks Texas)
