Roman Mid-Republican Campaign
Please see this thread: for further information (factions, influence, victory points, the year's events, etc)
News
The other thread is updated with new senatorial votes and current victory points. the Claudian stock has fallen low.
consuls Attius Maximus and Cornelius Lysimachos are assigned to the provinces of Italy and Cisalpine Gaul respectively.
praetors Lucius Cornelius Triarius Scipio and Claudius Hookton are assigned the provinces of Transalpine Gaul and Illyria respectively.
Action Required
All office holders must nominate a second in command to take control of their army in the event of their death.
* Hookton please PM neil123 and ask him to accept a 400 point challenge with Illyrians. Thanks.
*Maximus please PM MikeK and ask him to accept a 600 point challenge with Mid-Rep Romans under the same restrictions as he had before. Thanks. He may wish to negotiate. You can conduct talks by PM or fight him as you please.
*Triarius can you set up a second 400 pt battle with deeter as Gauls if you wish.
*Lysimachos, can you fight at 600 points versus egimus as Gauls please? Thanks.
PM results to me and also post a report to the senate in the forum. Thanks. You have essentially 2 weeks to fight as much as you can, so as soon as you've reported I'll define anotherchallenge for you.
It's also voting time for next years officials. Be aware some factions have changed in their influence and of course some have more victory points than others. Votes in by the 5th please.

Either that or I would. Probably a combination of both depending on time costraints and number of players.
I'd envisage more than six players ending up as 'teams', those above six joining an existing family. I'd also be limiing the availability of Inspired c-in-c's too. But I can go further into details if enough express interest.

Okay, that's half way to a minimum, thanks chaps.
I'm thinking that as the maximum a Roman force can muster without resorting to allies, is about 800 points, the state would start with 2000 points available for use (with more forces leviable if required by disaster or unexpected invasion). 400 points would be the minimum assignable for a foreign campaign, 200 for an Italian one. The maximum being 800 points assigned to any one 'theatre of operations' - though that could be split between two separate commands if necessary.
The relevant 'theatres' being Italy, Cisalpine Gaul, Transalpine Gaul, Spain, Sicily, Africa, Illyria, Macedon and Greece. Conquering Sicily would be necessary to conduct operations in Africa and operations in Spain would the Gauls at least quiescent (or one could fight one's way through).
As the senate had 300 members, each of the 6 player families would'control' the votes of between 25 and 50 senators initially (with the remainder being unattached whose votes would be assigned by me, either randomly, or in the case of a grave threat to the res publica, given to support the 'best' current general). Those starting with fewer votes would get better c-in-cs.
I don't want to overcomplicate the politics, and I want to keep the camaigns fairly abstract (adding flavour by means of missives to the senate from the players, ideally, boasting of success or playing down defeat). But I'd like it to have the appropriate Republican feel of fighting to be princeps, but having to cooperate with ones rivals also.

I volunteer to be the opposition if ever you need help (either permanently or just if you get overloaded), just pm me if ever you need someone to wipe out the Romans....
(I say this cos I can never be bothered with all the role play side of things, just like fighting battles!)
Cheers and good luck

I'll give that a try.
In principle I'd be happy for specific players to take on 'enemy' roles too (llyrians, Carthaginians, Spaniards and the like) but I'd like to start small (ish) and expand if feasible rathe rthan go too grandiose at the start and have to trim back.

Senatus Populusque Romanus!
The glory of Rome needs to be established amongst the peoples of the Mid-Earth Sea. We need to extend our frontiers and bring the peace and culture of Rome to the multitude of barbarian hordes and anachronistic followers of the failed Greek ideologies. I, Gaius Aemilianus Caesar, offer my humble services to the Senate and People of Rome. As legionary tribune, I have shed blood and sweat alongside the most excellent men of Rome, our soldiery. I have bloodied my blade upon the enemies of our great nation. I have led debates amongst our finest minds, the Senators who guide our path through the murky paths of diplomacy and politics.
Our great nation needs great leaders. If I am elevated to the rank of consul, I shall bring glory, victory and wealth to our great city. I shall leave politics to the political classes - I am blessed of Mars and destined for death or glory upon a field of war.
Ave!
G. Aemilianus Caesar

Many of the more independently minded senators are moved to support Aemilianus for consul.
There is considerable support for the idea of annexing Sicily.
Rumours of a vast horde of Transalpine Gauls about to cross the Alps abound.
Two Roman citizens have been put to death by an Illyrian prince.

Illyricum delenda est!
Illyria must be destroyed! They abuse our people, harass our borders and tax our merchants unremittingly. The time has come for Rome to bring these illiterate hill-born barbarians to heel. As consul, I would make it my first act to clear out this nest of vipers.
Roma victor!
