FOG PC Competition at IWF World Championships Athens

Post by jdm »

I know its a bit late in the day but Panos has persuaded us to run a trial event. So there will be a FOG PC competition at Athens.

No idea whether or not we will have any players at this late stage but we are willing to give it a try.

I will knock up some rules and get them out there shortly

I suggest if anyone is interested that they drop me a PM

Why not open it to virtual attendees - surely with the PC version you can play real time remotely!

Ohhh, now there's a thought. Playing all-comers at the home of ancient warfare!

Best let the Macedonian's and other 'Greek' armies win a few.... you might need to handicap the Roman armies

I'll be there but not sure when there will be time to play given the punishing schedule playing FOG 15mm mini's. Suspect the easiest way to play a tournie would be playing a 2 player hot seat historical battle playing the same scenario, twice as both sides, back to back on a knock out basis. With access at the venue on-line games using the DAG would work. Another would be to have players play the AI and the best two performers play 2 player hot seat as a finale. Keith

I just wanted to let you know based on the suggestion above we will be accepting online entries for the IWF world championships. Entry forms will be goign up soon and places are limited so I suggest you keep an eye on the site and apply quickly when they appear!

Online players will compete alongside those at the event so it will be a pretty unique experience!

Entry is free, all you need is your copy of FoG. We will be limiting it to historical scenarios from the orginal game so anyone can take part.

For timing considerations, it would be good to know as soon as possible, as it looks like we will have to choose between the IWC and Storm of Arrows BETA.

Thanks in advance.

I would expect you could do both if you have a second PC to install the beta test copy. Multiple VMs (virtual machines) would also work.

Or you could set up another boot partition with another copy of your OS on it. Then you can cleanly keep things apart on one machine - lots of googleable tutorials on how to do it out there.

Cheers

Wouldn't you also need a second copy of FOG and ROR on that second PC?

Multiple OS is too complicated for us lawyer types. I need an IT guy to boot up my computer each morning for pete's sake.

You would only need a second copy if you wanted to run both copies simultaneously. My understanding is that Slitherine licensing allows you to have the game installed on as many machines as you want. But you can only be signed in from a single machine at one time with a single product key for multi-player access. I assume the beta will be using a separate server due to being a different version number. So run on one PC to play beta multi-player games, then sign off and run on the other PC to play normal released version RoR games.

It uses teh same server but in a different list for betas so you could have bother versions as long as they were not used simulataneously.

I don't actually have two machines, so I suppose this is academic, but is the beta a stand-alone version, or an upgrade that requires you to have FOG and ROR installed as well? If so, unless I have the extended download option (which I may have) wouldn't you have to purchase a second copy of FOG and ROR to run the beta on a second machine?

You should be able to copy it to another folder on the same machine, but it would not woerk to copy to another machine.
