Cohesion tests and leaders bugs

Post by arsan »

Hi
Some developer should check the whole cohesion test system and the bonus leaders give in it as it is pretty messed up.
What the rules explain here about leaders bonus
http://www.hexwar.com/field-of-glory/he ... tests.aspx
http://www.hexwar.com/field-of-glory/he ... roups.aspx
Don't correspond to what the game really does so... or the rules are wrong or the game is bugged (or some combination of both)

You have an interesting discussion and test results about this problem here

Just played with this in Starter Army 3 with both sides run by me and with the details display up with extra details. (U and then H shortcuts).

The commander cohesion bonus correctly applies within his full command radius for cohesion tests from shooting, as is described in help.
The commander cohesion bonus is only applied to adjacent BGs and to the leader's for BGs for BGs taking cohesion tests while in combat.
I did not test cohesion tests for rallying/bolstering groups for cohesion but in this case the leader must also be adjacent to or with the BG for the bonus to apply according to the on line help.

Overall the best way to understand this is to take a scenario, run both sides yourself and turn on the display window. Some times details will scroll before you can read them but overall it does a good job of showing how the game is actually doing things.
So definitely it seems much of the cohesion test and leader bonus is completely messed up! :?
Not messed up at all, I think. That is probably as similar as they can get the PC rules to the TT rules.

In the TT rules: Troops count a general in command range if taking a test from shooting. However, troops in close combat (whose attention is rather more tightly focused) only get the cohesion bonus for a general if he is actually with the unit. Troops can only be bolstered at all if the general is with the unit. So with smaller units, on a hex grid, the PC game seems to be getting as close to this as possible.

The issue is not with the program logic therefore, but with the documentation, which needs to make it clearer that the above is how it works.

Hi rbodleyscott!

First thanks for chiming in and trying to offer some explanations.

But... well, if what the manual says and what the games does are completely different then certainly SOMETHING IS MESSED UP

I don't know the TT rules, nor have any idea how the developers had tried to apply them to the PC system... in fact i (still) don't have an opinion if i like how things work or how things were supposed to work.

I just want to know what the REAL cohesions tests modifiers are and how they are applied so i can plan my leaders purchase and battlefield positioning accordingly.

You know, leaders are not cheap at all in DAG and everybody seems to be buying them by "intuition" as we don't know for certain what they do or don't as it seems half the bonus explained at the rules don't really apply

So please Hexwar/slitherine: fix the game or fix the rules so both are the same and players can know how everything works!
After 5 months since release and an expansion i think its already time for such a basic concept as this to be CORRECTLY EXPLAINED/APPLIED

I should note that the help files are in fact just that - help files and not "the rules".

The rules are what is in the program.

As far as I can see, the rules are working as intended. However, the help files need to be corrected to clearly match the actual rules.

So I am agreeing with you that the help files need to be rewritten, but I do not think that the game is bugged.

So I suggest that until the help files are updated, as I am sure they will be when time permits, you work on the basis that Chris (batesmotel) has correctly identified the current rules (which I think he has) and play accordingly.

Sorry, i'm a human being, not a computer
I can't read the programming code, just what we are given as the RULES by Slitherine/Hexwar.
And as we don't have a proper manual, the help files are all we got to follow... and they seem to not be right :?
