Ian mentioned on 13 January that you'd look into whether the game could install its two My Documents to the My Games subfolder instead, as some other games do. Is this going to be possible? Looking forward to years of deleting them to clean up the directory list after each multi-player session is a rather gloomy prospect.
Thanks
Mike
Installation in My Games rather than My Documents?

Then why bother?MikeK wrote:Ian mentioned on 13 January that you'd look into whether the game could install its two My Documents to the My Games subfolder instead, as some other games do. To avoid that sad fate! A clean, well-mannered, hassle-free approach to file storage is both personally and I think generally desirable from a design point of view, and it matters more the more you play. Then why bother?
I understand Microsoft's procrustean mandate that games save in its default My Documents directory. This does however provide freedom for games to set up in the "thoughtfully" provided default "My Games" sub-directory, as other games in the past couple of years do.
There it is tucked away out of sight without impacting file management. Since I'm doing it very frequently and often urgently through each day, it pays to have a tight and orderly top level file structure to click through that fits in the various program prompt windows without having to scroll. Adding 2 top level directories crashing the party spoils this. I'm sure the programmers didn't intend any inconvenience. Since tucking the game saves away in My Games seems to be the new standard, or at least best practice, this seems a reasonable point to pursue, don't you think?

I'm slightly confused. The game creates one sub-folder in My Documents into which all the Slithery stuff goes. In a way, I would prefer if it was in My Documents/My Games but I don't understand why it matters more and more the more you play. Everything still goes in the one folder. I assume there's more to this than meets my rather technologically inept eye.
Playing as:
Danish - Won 1, Lost 2
Lancastrians - Won 3, Lost 3
Milanese - Lost 1
Scots Isles and Highlands - Lost 1
Swiss - Won 25, Lost 3

Well, I'm confronted with 2 folders - Slitherine & Field of Glory. One has saves but otherwise they can be deleted without noticeable effect.
If I open the game to play a turn, it starts recreating the folders. After playing, I delete them either immediately or, if I'm lazy, the next time they irritate me. I have not tried deleting them when playing and alt-tabbed due to concerns it would crash. More play sessions, more irritation.
I suppose a technical workaround to this feature might be to start the game with a shell of some kind that deletes the folders automatically after the game closes, but I have no clue how to do that properly.
Cheers,
Mike

I appreciate your response. I have 1.1.2 installed and it's still popping out two directories. If they both started with some character falling after z in alphabetized order it would be out of the way, but....
To make this problem go away, is there a safe and easy way to create a shell launcher that removes the folder when the game unloads?
I don't need save games for online play, but I am looking at Storm of Arrows and with several concurrent online games that means lots of short sessions. I could manage a simple DOS batch file at one point but how to achieve this in XP/Vista is a mystery.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Pip, any progress on this with the coming Storm release? If so, will a reinstall be required or will one of the two folders just stay deleted?pipfromslitherine wrote:Hmmm - it shouldn't be create the 2 folders any more. I will check to see whether the change got forgotten.
