Battle Fields

Post by CharlesRobinson »

I often choose to play on the most cluttered battle field as possible - especially for armies that historically did so - like the Illyrians and the Jews. Even then though, most of the battlefields that come up are very open. Do you plan to put out some more battle fields that reflect more dense terrain? Thanks

Like the TT version, the terrain is mostly clumping at the sides.

Otherwise, if the rough/difficult going was much thicker/worse, you'd end up with situations where you have a pike army w cataphracts faced off against the MF swarms all in rough/difficult. Wouldn't even be a game.

At least now, if you get the initiative, you narrow the battlefield and do restrict the HF/horsey armies to a degree.

But several battles took place in exactly that kind of terrain.

There are some properly mad hilly and stream filled battlefields available but I think both generals have to pick vry crowded or crowded terrain. My feeling is that there's an element of randomness too in that if general A picks crowded and B picks mixed, sometimes it will end up denser than either wanted and sometimes slightly less dense. Or maybe army type affects it too (so very dense is a bit different if your army is horsey compared to if it's medium footish).

Sometimes I've picked very crowded and ended up with masses of open space fighting an army that I'd have thought wouldn't want open. Other times I've had hill/stream infested battlefields. But it's impossible to know what the other general picked, so drawing conclusions is pretty hard.

Lancastrians - Won 3, Lost 3
Milanese - Lost 1
Scots Isles and Highlands - Lost 1
Swiss - Won 25, Lost 3

Terrain choice goes to the side with the highested initiative, determined by quality of the CinC, advantage in mounted troops and a dice roll -- just like in the table top rules. So if your win initiative, you choice of battlefield prevails.

But only the challenger gets to select a terrain option.....

I hadn't noticed that. Just went to verify by accepting a challenge but all games were password protected. If that is the case, then maybe the other side defaults to their favorite terrain?

Both sides get to select their terrain preference. The terrain options appear for the issuer when he opts for a DAG army and they appear for the other party after he accepts a challenge.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was starting to doubt my sanity.

Edited to add that the number of cav don't appear to matter, just leadership and a die roll.
