Medium Foot running out in the open

Post by IanB3406 »

I am playing the Maccabean Jewish list with Drilled Medium Foot Offensive Spearmen. In my recent game they keep running out impetuously in front of the Seleucid army in a form of kamikaze attack groups.

1) Is this broken? It makes this army almost worthless....no way to anchor a flank......
2) If not broken it's a major change from the TT game, and can anyone explain the justification?

welcome to shock troops....who will test to charge (or test to try to not charge) enemy within range...offensive spears, lancer mounted, impact foot...

Having a commander close helps a bit...

Yes, the tabletop game has the same troops, but medium foot will not run out into the open even if they are shock.....I just wonder the justification for the different interpretations.....

if those medium foot are offensive spear they are shock troops an they just might run off on you like that. Only way to keep them in line would be if they are in terrain, well the TT is like that so one can only assume....

Unfortunately, in FOGC they do charge out of the terrain. I have taken to using Thracians (who are not shock troops) to avoid this. But they are undrilled :(

This makes Bosporan militia the best MF and Italians a close second.

Something for the developers to sort out I think.

Why do I feel so 'dirty' when a play Bosporans?

I am only playing them for 'research' at the moment. My pike army just cant seem to beat them, so I thought I'd play from the enemy's point of view to see if I can discover a weakest. I haven't found it so far... hehe

One reason for Bosporans being popular is that they are the only real steppe type shooty cavalry army included with RoR. Hopefully that will change with Immortal Fire and Legions Triumphant when those are released. Of course the Bosporans will become more potent too since many of their legal ally options are currently unavailable due to the lack of allied army lists that will be included in the later supplements.

Good, because my beloved Pontics have 3 compulsory thureophoroi, but I cannot let them go anywhere near the enemy in case they run amok.

Actually, the primary reason they are popular (at least for me) is that they are the only real armored lancer list in the game so far. Shooty cav is less of an issue (at least until armored shooty cav arrive).

Actually, I may well like the early version of the list better than the mid or late. While 6 lancers may not be quite enough, 18 cavalry horse archers really is quite effective and relatively inexpensive. Since the unarmoured cavalry archers are no easier to shoot at than armoured cavalry or even cataphract camels (see my post in the support forum about that), this gets rid of the major drawback of unarmoured cavalry from the TT rules.
