Staffordshire Hoard

Post by list_lurker »

Hi , slightly OT - but relavent to some here

Background -

"The hoard represents the single biggest discovery of Anglo Saxon artefacts, and thus represents an invaluable national treasure and testimony to our Anglo Saxon heritage."

as it stands if the fundraising doesn't reach the £3M mark then the collection could be split and sold (potentially overseas)

There is a petition raised with no 10 to try contest this

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Stafford-hoard/

Petition listed as
"We, the undersigned, petition the Government to ensure that if public fundraising fails to achieve the target within the deadline, that Government funds the shortfall. It is essential that the hoard remains intact within the UK, preferably at museums local to the hoard’s discovery. At the very least, an export ban should be imposed without delay, to ensure the hoard is not sold to overseas buyers."

If you are interested please follow the link above. As it stands its not even at the 500 signees required to moved on 'officially'

thanks

Simon

Until mid-April there are 50-odd pieces on display at Birmingham Museum, and on Saturday. when I was there, there wasn't a queue to get in (which made a change from the 3 hour long queue they had at Stoke).

I picked up a copy of Richard Underwood's Anglo-Saxon Weapons & Warfare when I was there and after reading it on the train home was fired up to get myself a Pagan Anglo-Saxon army until I took a look at the army lists.

thanks to all that donated at the weekend at WMMS – we raised just over £100, I like to think that this was what tipped the balance!

Good news anyway
