MAWS Anniversary (not quite FoG) 19 Mar 2010
Manchester Area Wargames Society will be 40 next year. As such we are organising some celebratory events.
The MAWS tour will take place on the weekend of 19 Mar 2010
The weekend will take the form of a “competition”, however no rules currently in competition use are allowed. In fact the older the rules are the better. We will have WRG 1st Edition, hopefully someone will volunteer Little Wars, etc. Each person will be asked to bring a figures game adhering to the above criteria. So bring those games that you fell in love with when you started playing. Everyone will run and score their game and the 2 players of the game will score them. In the end a team and a person will win.
Places at the event will be limited, we have a very big hall, but the main limiting factor will be the remainder of the venue filling up and therefore leaving us with no accommodation.
The venue is Butlins at Bognor Regis, Sussex. Unfortunately, for some, this is an over 18’s weekend, so no children are allowed.
The aim of the weekend is to have FUN play a few games and, if you are called Hammy, tell a few stories. Then, come Britcon 2020, you can tell the younger gamers to pull up a sandbag and you regale them all about that wonderful weekend when Phil took you to play war at Butlins.

I have uploaded the full details of the event to the files pages of the Yahoo FoG anf BHGS mailing lists.
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/FieldofGlory/files/
or
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/BHG ... ing/files/
If you aren't a member of either of these please pm me and I will send you the details, but here is a brief synopsis.
Ground
The event will take place at Butlins Bognor Regis
Google Map Link so you can get directions.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... p=IIIOOOO.
TAOR In Detail
We get silver standard (luxury) accommodation for three nights and all the live entertainment you can eat for the very reasonable sum of £100. They set up and take down the tables in the conference room we have which is 18m x 40m
Situation
4. Enemy Forces (umpires). We will be our own worst enemy. All participants will be placed in one of three teams, each competing against the others. For the purposes of the weekend each person will umpire 2 games, each for opposing players of the other 2 teams. (See Co-Ord Instr for timings)
a. Dress. If you want, you can umpire your game in fancy dress. This is not compulsory.
b. Equipment. Each person is asked to bring a complete game of their choosing. A game that they enjoyed when the first started gaming, one that is no longer played competitively in the UK, the older the better. All the figures for that game, terrain, cloth, rules, dice, etc.
c. Intent. To produce a fun game for the players that takes about 3 hours. Shorter games could be played twice, the players switching sides. Each of the players will mark the umpire on their enjoyment.
d. Strengths. This will enable you to put on a game you enjoy, so hopefully others will. It will also ensure the maximum diversity of games
e. Fire Support. If you cannot supply a complete game ask, and tell us the sort of thing you like/need, I’m sure between us we can find one.
5. Friendly Forces
Main Effort
My main effort is concentrated on getting as many people to the event as possible and then getting them to have as enjoyable a weekend as possible. Your help in this is needed.
Supporting Units/Fire Support. Any thing you need, just ask.
6. Civilians and Refugees. Civilians are EXTEREMELY friendly and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Service Support.
Dress. if you want
Equipment. Remember that you may need a simple brief and explanation of your game. If you need to change some of the rules, due to changes in basing, simplification feel free to do so. If you can assist others with games equipment that would be appreciated. Details of what may be needed I will collate, then offer up.
Weapons. Toy soldiers and dice. And the ability to complain about somebody else’s good luck and your own bad luck.
Ammunition. You may need some beer money, there are re-supply points on site. However the ATMs charge so it is cheaper to get cash back when you buy anything.
Rations. There are plenty of eating places on site. Burger King, Pizza, Kebab, chippy, Restaurant, to name but a few.
Medical. There is a medical centre on site, but headache pills should be brought as a precaution.
Prisoners. If you get taken prisoner panic.
Transport. Everywhere on site is within walking distance.
Scoring. Each game will be scored. Umpires will score the 2 players 0-10 on how well they did. Sum of score cannot be more than 10. Each player will score the umpire 0-5 on how well they enjoyed the game.
Prizes. Awards will be given for: highest scoring player, best game, highest scoring team, worst team, and most average team. Everybody wins. Got to be politically correct these days.

A Short Reportphilqw78 wrote:This is next weekend. One player has dropped out so I have a free, yes free*, entry if you can be there
*3 nights accommodation and games to laugh at
Laugh.... yes we had a laugh
Varied games from Don Featherstone's ancients rules (ancient brits vs Roman's) to Warlord (for those who dont know it a boardgame based on the future conquest Europe and near Asia and the irradiation of its enhabitants) - No FoG to report as this was a step backwards in time- all the games were quite old, pre 1980's on the whole. Hammy even retrograded his copy of AH "Civilisation" to remove the trade cards which did not exist before 1979!
Thanks to Phil for the organisation and entertainment
