The Battlefield: Definitely unique...a stream right through centre. It proved critical! The swamp on the Roman left, the hills on their right, all prove critical.
A. This was suppose to be the key to success: our Spanish ally (14 HF Celtiberians + 4 LF + Commander). (Two LH were detached to the far right flank initially but did come thundering back late in the battle.)
Unfortunately, their commander never took geography in school. The entire mob gets bogged down in the swamp and streams, is caught on the edge by the swarms of Iberian MF coming from "1." Unable to advance, unable to turn and retreat, the entire force is cut down to the man.
But it does take time. Perhaps they were the key to success after all. HmmMmmMmm...maybe that commander was smarter than first thought!
B. The Roman centre: (9 armoured average HF + 3 superior spears + velites + 6 superior Cretans + IC). For the majority of the battle, it advances to the stream line and holds there, further to the left than where it ends the battle. Both sides shout insults across the water but neither wants to charge in and be disordered.
Eventually, the Romans start to move to their right, as their left disintigrates, trying to avoid being caught from two directions. Only problem was one lone HF Roman had charged uncontrolled across that stream...he eventually slaughters his opponent, a friendly ally HF chases the router, and the entire Roman line was finally free to move.
Some Spanish hold between the Romans and the far left swarm of Celtiberians at "A."
C. The Roman right: 4 superior HF + 1 elite spear. These prove unstoppable! When the Spanish swarm from "3" arrives, they are sliced up one by one. Some hold on the edge of the hills but the Romans, aided by the centre shifting over, charge up into them, before the Spanish right can arrive. Whole-sale slaughter ensues. That is 80pts of rout ... 40 Spanish BGs routed, almost all from this area.
