We have a strange case last week. An Ordenance French bowmen (8 bases 4-4) was fighting an Italian Heavy Infantry BG (6 bases on 3-3) on uneven terrain when was charged in the flank by a Knights unit (4 bases in column). In the previous turn the French have broken and pursuit a Italian swordsmen unit. Pursuing the extreme left base have hit the Italian infantry. A normal fighting have developed with no damage to either part, both sides fight with a two bases front (overlaping each other) . Them the Knights charge the French unit in the right flank. The French turn the charged bases 90% and survive the charge, (thanks to the uneven terrain). After impact the Knights expanded. The question is: Can the French match the overlapping Knights using the central bases of the battle group not committed in the fight against either Italian battle group? In the game we decided that that can’t be done as it will splint the battle group, but it looks odd to me, should not the French expand, them move back the bases at 90% angle to retain contact and them the Knights should move forward?
The problem was that they did not (contribute dice), as prior to the Knights charge, the ordenace bowmen have a front of 4 bases and only the extreme right was in front to front contact with the heavy foot so the two bases on the centre-left were then fighting the Italian foot as an overlap (so leaving the 4 right bases free). After the Knights charge the two extreme right bases turn and fight against the Knights at 90%. This left two bases (central right) uncommitted looking in the void. The confusion came from page 73 as those bases seems to fulfill the criteria for moving into overlap. I’m glad to clear that point (I was playing against my wife and won the game!)
