Okay, Here is my final 650 point Samurai

Post by irondog068 »

Which of the 2 lists do you think I should try for Little Wars:

List #1
1xFC
2xTC
7x6 Bushi: Medium foot/Armored/undrilled/Average/BW*/HW
1x6 Samurai: Cav/Armored/undrilled/Superior/BW/Swordsman

Or
1xFC
3xTC
7x6 Bushi: Medium foot/armored/undrilled/average/BW*/HW
1x4 Samurai/Cav/Armored/undrilled/superior/BW/Swordsman

I like #2 becasue it gives me the option to bolster 4 units and get rerolls. The real answer is probably to get a second 4 stand cavalry unit but, #1 in middle of remodling real house, and #2 12 Perry/Kingsford/TAG 28mm cavalry are not that cheap and with the baby well you know

I will sit down and wait for my answer.

It's probably best to stay away from 6 stand BG of shooty cavalry, especially undrilled. It makes them significantly less maneuverable and can be very difficult to get them deployed in one rank if you want them to be able to skirmish. So I'd go with option 2 until you can field a seeecond BG of cavalry.

Unfortunately neither list is legal. If you take a BG of Detached bushi (samurai cavalry) then you must have a BG of Detached followers, 1 BG per BG of detached bushi.

If you use option 2 and swap a TC for a 6 base BG of Detached followers the list is then legal.

Not for cavalry,
Only for foot Samurai. I too had to re read the army list. Where I caught it is when you read the starter army list.

In the starter army there are 2 BGs of Detached bushi and 2 BGs of Detached yari-armed followers, they are still Detached followers, they have just been upgraded.

Since I am work and will not be able to check the book till tomorrow cavalry is diffrent then detached Bushi. If I am wrong (don't think so) I will change one of the normal Bushi to Ashigaru with yari.

You are wrong, it doesnt matter if The Detached Bushi is on foot or mounted, for each one you must field one Detached Follower.

Anyway, for the Bushi better if you go with 8 bases for each BG to maximize your shooting.

Well,
Since I can't see the book till 0800 tomorrow morning I will have to see. :? But it you two are right here is my change:
#3 list
1xFC
3xTC
1x8 Bushi: Medium foot/armored/undrilled/average/BW*/HW
5x6 Bushi: Medium foot/armored/undrilled/aveage/BW*/HW
1x4 Samurai cav/Armored/undrilled/average/bow/sword
1x6 Ashigaru/Medium foot/protected/undrilled/yari

How does this sound? But I still do not agree with you 2 guys but I cannot debate it since I have no way to get to my book till the morning. The Fire Dept frowns on taking a rig 15 miles or so out of district to get a FOG book

I agree with earlier contributors

List is quite clear you must have a unit of followers for each unit of detached Bushi (whether mounted or on foot).
You can then (probably will) upgrade them.

As promised I was not going to argue the point till I was off duty and had the book in my hot little had. and yesy you guys are right  I will now go into the penalty box for 2 minutes and feel shame........Two minutes later. Here is my list

1x FC
3x TC
1x 8 Bushi: Medium foot/Armored/undrilled/BW*/HW
5x6 Bushi: Medium foot/Armored/undrilled/BW*/HW
1x4 Samurai: Cavalry/Armored/undrilled/BW/Sword
1x6 Ashigaru: Medium foot/protected/Yari

I could make more Bushi 8 fig units but I most units orginized into matching mons and it would bother me to mix and match ( I know anal but it is my army).

So Know, What do you guys think? I could make a few more 8 fig units but the thought of having 8 commaders helping with re rolls. I think this would help since I bet in the tourny I will face at least one 28mm Roman drilled killing machine.

NOW,
I will sit down and wait for my answer

Again, Bushix8 per BG, its the ideal, with 6 you only generate 3 shooting dices with 8 you get 4, and you need them against troops with better POA, and Romans are one of them, Impact Foot + SS, they get the upper hand against the Bushi in the Impact phase, and since is probably that you have to test cohesion after the impact, you arleady get one -1 for losing against HF. And for the shooting, with 3 dices against a better armoured opponent like the romans, means that the odds are very on the line to force him a cohesion teste for shooting.

The ideal list for me at 650 pts goes like this, put the minimum bases need to the Bushis, 24, divided in 3 BG of 8 each. Field 2 BGs of CV, 4 bases each, and 2 BGs of Yaris again one with 8 bases, they are a good punch for these list, they get POAs in Impact and Melee against any one.

The extra points goes to a Inspired Commander, you will need him, and to ... whatever you want, yes even the fillers, the poor Mobs.

"8 Commanders"?????

But yes keep the four - consider using allied comanders and perhaps consider the field fortifications with the points difference
Alternatively drop the 8 unit to 6 and spend the points on field fortifications.
I'd guess without some luck in shooting you will need them against legions and they don't cost that much.
Against other armies Najinata / Bow Armour should see you through.
And don't forget you can whiz about and make best use of terrain features as your just about all medium foot.

As I have said elsewhere compared to other rulesets Samurai play as a very nervous army - or is that just me

I like the 8 commander idea

Too bad you can't have that many. I do not have the funds (Perry, Kingsford or TAG are not cheap), or the time before Little Wars. I have used the Samurai twice, once a tie against a 100% cavalry Mongol army. The second a huge win against the "Yuan can cook" Chinese army. But these were 800 point 28mm jobs. I found the Yari armed Ashigaru kind of a liablity as they have no missile weapon and being protected they take it on the chin being shot at. I also found skilled swordsman Samurai were a little brittle in impact and I am going to Yari. And I got the figures to do it!
I also found Fortifcations a let down beacause pretty quickly My 100% Samurai went "Over the Top" pretty quickly in the game. Plus I only have 4 stands of Tate (Pavises) and I am all about the "look". That is why I do not know how many 8 stand units I could put together since I have to match mons!

I like the idea of 2 calvary units but do not know if it is worth it due to the fact they come with 2x Ashigaru protected with Yari

Dont have the list handy but can you not take Armoured Bow as followers and poor HvyW/Bow instead of the Yari Ashiguri
Aesthetically the armoured bow would be a nice addition to the army and you get to use the Tate.
