FoG Army List/Chronology

Post by Lupus »

Hi people,

As I had some time during the last days, I prepared a PDF, which shows all armies listed in the FoG companions in a chronological way, more or less to help me getting a bit organized for scenario design.

If you like you can download it at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/540539/Field%20 ... Armies.pdf

Currently Companions 11 and 12 are missing (I ordered them but didn't get them yet). Also the second half of Lost Scrolls is missing. All of them - 11, 12 and 13.5 - will be added during the next days.
I tried to have the various peoples/countries on one horizontal axis (Rome for example is the uppermost row, from Early Republic until the destruction of Byzantinium). Also I tried to do regional clusters (France next to Germany, England next to Scotland, ...). This structure was not always possible, due to the sheer number and diversity of the armies presented in the companions.

The colors I used are based on the border colors of the actual books. Here I had to do variations in order to keep it distinguishable.

Anyway, it would be nice if you drop a note, if you like the chronology or offer constructive critic.

Nice. Pedantically list number would be nice after the date or something.

No idea, it's a regular PDF, generated by Adobe Illustrator. If you like, you can PM me your eMail address and I'll email the file to you.

Bertalucci: try zooming out!

I encountered exactly the same problem as you: all I seemed to have was a blank screen.

So I right-clicked the link, and saved the pdf file that way.

When I opened it in Acrobat Reader, it was obvious that what I'd been seeing was the blank space in the upper left corner...

The page size is nominally 100 cm * 40 cm, so I shall have to see if I can print out a readable copy on one of the plotters at work!

Lupus: sorry to find fault with your brilliant chart, but I've just noticed that the second half of the Late Dynastic list is missing.

The period missing is the revolt against the Persians: this runs from 405 BC to 343 BC, and covers the 28th, 29th and 30th Dynasties.

I look forward to seeing the announcement of your updates, when you add in the other items you mentioned in your original post.

Thanks again for your efforts on the community's behalf.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll fix the Late Dynastic list and post the rest of Lost Scrolls by tomorrow. I had hoped to include companions 11+12 by my next update, but both books are still somewhere in the mail between Britain and Germany :-(

Anyway, as I said, next update tomorrow and the rest when the books arrive...

Update: New version uploaded. You can find it on the same URL: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/540539/Field%20 ... Armies.pdf. When you the one withe the arabesque corner decorations, you have the updated one.

What's new in this version?
- Fixed Late Dynastic Egyptians to include 28th, 29th and 30th dynasties (thx to johno)
- Added the missing lists from Lost Scrolls. In order to place the German lists together with the other Germans, all other lists, which were placed below the Germans in the previous chart had to moved downwards, thus increasing the height of the whole chart.

P.S.: When the chart is complete - after adding the lists from companion 11 + 12, the final chart will be placed on the official FoG site.

Final version

Post by Lupus »

Hi people,

Finally companions 11 & 12 arrived. I added them to the chart and uploaded the final version on http://dl.dropbox.com/u/540539/Field%20 ... Armies.pdf.

What else is new?
I changed several colors to get better readability and re-arranged several armies in order to both compact the chart and to get a better regional clustering. The printed chart is now ~40" x 25".

This version will be posted on the official resource material site.

Lupus, it's a great chart and I am very grateful for all you work, but it's so large I wonder if you could find a way to provide it in time-related chunks ?

For example, I'm a big fan of pre -AD armies I would love a smaller one that just showed those. The current PDF format won't let me trim or modify the chart to access the bits I'm really interested in.

Can you provide a cut down one ?

Failing that is there any chance you could let us have access to the spreadsheet (I assume) you used to create it ?
