to be honest if the machine is not 100% backwards compatible then its more likely to be the developers fault rather than microsofts/sonys. The console developers set out VERY strict guidelines for development if they are not followed to the letter then it may still run fine on a PS1, but it wont on a PS2, i know a number of smaller japanese titles suffered from this with PS1/2
