Samurai Figures in 15mm

As for Late Heian-Muromachi Samurai, I think that the figures best corresponding to the era are the Essex ones. In fact, Essex's whole samurai series seems to be designed to fit exactly that era, which I, unfortunately, have not found in any other companies. They are good figures, well designed and well cast, but as far as FoG's superior armored spear-armed samurai go, you will not find any - the samurai (bushi, in fact) warriors are mostly armed with bows. You will however find a huge series of lesser followers armed with something that can be interpreted as a naginata, or even a yari.

I only wish that the options offered for the monks were more numerous - unfortunately Essex seems to offer only monks that would fit the description of unprotected - no armored or superior/average/poor ones. Also, no mounted monks with bow (unless you bend their spear!).

And if you choose another company for armored (or other) monks, then you'll most probably be entering another era, with another armor design.

But, then again, this is only a game...!

I had an art history instructor once who was astonished at the amount of knowledge I had regarding the ancient and medieval world. I later told her that it was entirely from wargaming, and resources such as the Penguin atlases, Osprey books and WRG. I truly was a year or two ahead of the class, and she shifted me to an independent study which was great. Really, we all have an impressive understanding of history compared to the majority of our peers, and it is due to our hobby.

I am not sure which is dominant - the overvaluation of universities, or the dismissal of passionate amateurs. Both errors are at work I think.
