The Problem(s) with Evades/Routs

Post by Blathergut »

One main problem seems to be when a unit routs, it routs directly away from the enemy charge. However, there can be an empty space behind it, but if the next space is occupied by friendly, and there is a whole line of friendly (like pikes or such), the evade/rout simply continues in the same direction down the entire line.

I thought to take a screen shot, but anyone can recreate the situation. Make a line of pikes or such. Stick a friendly LH two or three hexes up from one end of the line. Have said LH charged by enemy it will evade from. Poof...LH ends 6 or 7 or more hexes down...disrupting the whole line.

I can see going through the first unit directly behind you, maybe, but even then, if open hexes are to either side, wouldn't the unit just shift slightly? Nonetheless, after that, the choice should be to open hexes, not running down an entire line of troops you can't interpenetrate and who may all be locked in combat.

Anyone have any other situations?

I have not noticed any odd behavior when units rout (although i understand some players feel that if there are "open spaces" the unit should rout through those in lieu of thru your own men, my opinion is there should be the risk of them doing so, even if you make "rout lanes" as seems historical and adds more challenge )

I have seen maybe once per game where units that are evading "slide" thru lines of your own men, exceeding their maximum move allowance (actually had a cataphract , 3 move allowance , slide maybe 5 to 6 hexes in an evade 10 minutes ago!)
However, I have not seen them disprupt a line of units as you describe...that is some very unlucky die roles (hope it didnt happen in a multplayer game!)

Screenshots would definitely help - just setting up a situation can take a fair but of time and we may not do it as you do it.

Evade Problem #1

Post by Blathergut »

Here you go. I just lined them up, to show, but could be any situation with a battle line, even engaged, and some sort of skirmish stuff on flank, or something routing on the flank.

Image

The spears are lining up for attack, LH near the bottom of the screen is off doing what it does best, chucking javelins and running. The Roman horse (commander) is about to charge the LH.

Image

Having been charged, LH evades directly away. But despite open ground to both sides, instead ploughs down through spears and elephants and whatever was there for whatever length, disrupting everything, even if it had been locked in combats along the whole thing.

I concur I have seen the exact behavoir as illustrated above with evades in both official and user designed scenariors, but have not seen the disruption effects (fortunaltely!)
If it happens again I make a copy of the saved game.
