FoG Early Adopters Discount Expiring

Post by IainMcNeil »

Thanks to all you early adopters of Field of Glory. For those of you still on the fence the early adopters rate of £19.99 will be expiring at the end of the month and the full price will be £24.99.

So if you have not purchased already please do so before the price goes up it's final RRP!

Don't say we didn't warn you!

I purchased it last week and was surprised to have tax of £2.10 added to the price. Normally in the UK a price quoted for an item includes any tax.

Same for me - bought it at the weekend & was annoyed it was not actually £19.99 as heavily stated. Should be a lot clearer what the true price is even if that only means having 'excl. VAT' after the price.

Comes across as a cheap treat otherwise which is a shame as the software is great, as I've grown to expect from Slith & Hexwar.

I must admit feeling a little miffed at the hidden VAT charge too. Is there a reason for not stating the vat incl price like all other online sellers?

Just done a couple of internet searches on this and it looks like it may be illegal in the UK to quote prices for goods excluding VAT, unless mainly selling to businesses.

Digital River - our download provider/payment collection - is a US company and this is how it works in the US in shops etc. The tax collection is totally outside our control. Our site is .com, not co.uk. The US is our largest single customer but the site is totally international so we don't know what tax to charge until you get to that point of the purchase process so we can't even tell what the final price should be. The tax is added and collected by Digital River and paid to the appropriate governments tax agency - all we do is set the pre tax prices and they handle the rest. We never even see the tax.

Large companies have a separate store for each territory and can calculate the tax and apply it but we do not have the resources for that. Keeping one site up to date is hard enough!

I'm not sure there is much we can do about it. Hope that clears it up.

I was wondering if you purchase Rise Of Rome, with further updates to the game will you still use the original FOG key or will we have to keep track of a new key with this purchase?

Each update will have a key but you should only have to enter the additional keys once. We're looking at ways to avoid the need for entering the key with patches. It should not be too hard - we just need to find out the best way to do it without compromising security.

One thing you can do is stop making incorrect statements about the price of the game such as this :

The price was not £19.99 and will (presumably) not be £24.99. In fact it will be nearer £30 once tax is added.

But the issue is that the exact price will be different depending upon your country, or even your state or province within a country. The cost in New York will be different to Vermont. Even in the UK VAT has varied back and forth recently.

It's not an ideal situation, it would better if we were able to get the store to report the total cost for some territories, especially if it has the potential to cause confusion or annoyance. But at no point are you charged without it being clear how much the purchase will cost you.

Cheers

Pip

It is normal in the US to quote prices excluding tax, so it is no problem for US states having different rates. In the UK, prices for goods are quoted including VAT. The price quoted of £19.99 / £24.99 is clearly a UK price, so why not give the actual price people will have to pay ?

perhaps you should add to your site the cost of the item and a note that the price may not include taxes depending on your region. Something like that so anyone who purchases at least knows its not a tax in price.
Like the US we Canadians don't see taxes added on to an advertised price so its not a biggie here either

These pages are inside the DR system and we are not able to customize them like that. Unfortunately it is just the way the system works.

Well, i only find the final price with taxes when i buy something in Steam, in matrixgames you find the advice of the VAT or local taxes... you can add in the store a tax calculator for example in the list of games.

Talking about price... in matrixgames the game is 1,68 euros less than Slitherine non full price and matrixgames dont use discounts with new games, only after one year in the special holidays... 1,68 euro isnt a great number but with many expansions 2 or 3 plus the game with the same matrix tactic... (3+1)*1,68 = 6,72 euros or 5.92659 GBP.

But hey, you know, now GBP is down the problem is when it is up and can buy the expansion here to test your store

I suppose you could suggest it to DR as a future enhancement to their system. Alternatively, possibly the posters here could post suggestion to DR if DR has a customer support/suggestion site.
