GS: What happens to Soviet leaders purchased before war?

Post by jjdenver »

Hi,

I bought a couple of Soviet commanders pre-Barbarossa. Now that the war has started they are not available for placement. Did I get refunded the PP? Or is it lost forever? I purchased two expensive commanders so am keen to hear. :)

Thx

You can purchase leaders for all major powers, but you can't place them until they join the war. So the leaders you bought won't be lost. When Barbarossa starts then you can place them. One reason to buy leaders prior to being at war is to be able to place the leaders on turn 1 of the war instead of building them on turn 1 and placing them on turn 2.

Remember that most major powers get free leaders. Which leaders you get depends on the scenario. In the 1939 scenario you get the following free leaders:
Germany: Rundstedt
Italy: Graziani
UK: O'Connor
France: Gamelin
USA: None
USSR: Timoshenko

These leaders will be available at the time the country joins the war. For Germany, UK and France the leaders are available at turn 1 since these countries are already at war.

Another Q, in a game I had the French leader injured in the last battle for Paris, sending him on R&R for 15 rounds or so. If i activate the Free French before the commander is back, can he then come as a reinforcement for a FF unit?

That's a good question; but I fairly confident (98%) that that leader will disappear from the queue and from the game after 15 turns even if Free France is active. This is a situation that you'd have hotseat to be 100% confident of the answer.

No the leader can't be placed on a Free French unit. The reason is that France is a different power than Free France. Minor countries can't have leaders. We tried to allow the Americans to build de Gaulle or LeClerc for Free France, but it wasn't possible to place these leaders on Free French units.

Yep sort of expected that. might be nice for a future version to have leaders for FF and the "major minors", ie Mannerheim for the Finns etc etc.
