15mm Chinantec spearmen (image)

Post by khurasan_miniatures »

Here are the greens of the 15mm Chinantec spearmen, for the army in Blood and Gold:

Image

The ring on the head is a bit more pronounced on the models than will be the case on the production castings because of crushing in the mouldmaking process -- so they were made bigger to compensate for compression. The spears could be even longer! Some sources say 15 feet, others say over 20! But this is as long as we could comfortably make them and still get them to cast.

This army should be out in spring of 2010. The skirmishers (bows and slings in simple breechclout) are being made now, and I'm working on getting the depiction of the noble archers (like undrilled Janissaries, basically) correct, as well as command.

Nice, and something that nobody else makes as yet. I wish you lots of luck with them.

Nice. And interesting shields and spears. But looking on another new range, I wonder if and when you'll finish your other ones such as the Arabs?

Arabs are complete and are on the runway waiting to take off. :) The Anglo-Danes were just released, then I will release the Arabs, and after that 14th Century Swiss. After the Swiss come Crecy-period English, then the Chinantecs.

Additions to lines will be coming intersperced with those new lines.

Coming soon are mediterranean troops for the Normans/Franks -- Sicilian Saracens, Griffon javelinmen, Italian communal spearmen (yes, 11th century Communal spearmen!) and a pose for the Franks in Italian/Byzantine influenced armour (lamellar) so that the Franks can be used as Italo-Normans or 11th Century Lombards.

Late Romans will soon get skirmishing javelinmen and slingers, as well as a very, very neat cheiroballista with proper late roman crew, including my favourite model in the whole Late Roman range! Also a "Vienna Genesis" tent for the Late Romans/Early Byzantines so they don't have to use the old classical tent model anymore.

Later Germans are getting Sarmaticized/Easternized Germans, with steppe trousers, nobles with the long lance, and even infantry spearmen with the big wicker pavise.

I have something I made specifically for Field of Glory players too, which I hope they find useful. :D

Much of this is done, just waiting to be released. A lot of it is not painted for display yet.

Oh really?

Weeeeell. I think we are both going to be happy that I had not really gotten stuck in on buying my Goths and Gepids . . .

What would these shields look like? I read in B&G that they are fabric, but that's about it.

No examples survive but Spanish accounts suggests they were similar to earlier shields in meso-america which could be rolled up. Probably with horizontal canes or wood to give strength but with some kind of fabric or leather covering. Possibly also padded with cotton to absorb the slashing action of the blades?

As you can no doubt tell, no one really knows!

I am wondering if these were drab or colorful. I would imagine colorful.

Yes, Graham's got it -- I used Heath's reconstruction which he based on Mayan shields which are similarly destined, and were illustrated.

Heath mentions colours, two I remember off the top of my head being red and blue, but these, he suggests, would be faded based on the types of dyes that were probably used.

They also painted themselves, especially their faces and legs, in mostly red and black.

The skirmishers are being made now, slingers and archers, because I wanted to put off the hard choice of how to depict the noble archers!!! :)

Really great miniatures ;)
I didn't purchase Blood and Gold yet, but armies to fight with ancients may be interesting to play and paint.
But could it be possible for Aztecs... to succeed in front of a Medieval European army ?

If I can beat Medieval European armies with Libyans then Aztecs would be fine if handled correctly. The suit wearers are actually rather dangerous troops in FoG. Aztecs aren't going to like fighting knights, armoured sword and buckler men or pikes but then they weren't in reality.

The points system is generally fine and Aztecs get a freebie in their javelins.

Overall I would say that Aztecs would have a very hard time against armies like Mongol otr Hunnic but medievals are OK as long as you don't stand in the way of the nasty stuff.

Really? I wouldn't have thought these would be all that scary for them.

I would have thought that massed armoured cavalry lancers would be a much bigger threat.

I see the issue for Aztecs being missile fire, specifically bowfire. They are only protected and while they are quite good troops for the most part they really haven't much of an answer to a shooty mounted force. Armoured bow/sword cavalry are not bad against them either.

Aztecs are too expensive to cover the table to light horse will slip past and be able to concentrate fire. Shooty cavalry will be able to double up as impact troops. All in all not a pretty match up for the guys in feathers.

Some of the other Blood and Gold armies will do fine against shooty mounted but not IMO Aztecs.

So, any change of heart since Phil's mighty victory over the Early Byzantines?
