I must be doing something stupid

Post by Solaristics »

I'm creating a balanced version of the Tunis scenario, but I'm having some trouble. I copied the original Tunis folder into the custom scenario folder, opened it in the editor, edited it and saved. However, when I go to play it (opening it from the custom scenario list), it loads as the original scenario. I go back to the editor to check the changes are still there, and they are. What gives?

P.S. The changes I made to the description file appear OK when I start the game, and all the changes appear in the game-fixed.xml file.

It happens also to me, I edited a copy of Dertosa (very unbalanced pro romans) by adding a pair of units but when I load it to play it there are no new units. If then I use the editor to move away other units and to place the new units into the vacant hexagons, loading the scenario I obtain empty hexagons while the default units are into the new locations. All the changes appear in the game-fixed.xml file

I believe i've read in a previous post that its better to design all new scenarios and not use the Default scenarios as they can't be changed.

It would be a pretty poor general who deliberately fought a battle that he had only a 50% chance of winning!
Sure, but if you follow that logic through it would be a much poorer or desperate general who fought a battle that had less than a 50% chance, which is the only other option for one of the players. I think playing out scenarios against the odds is fun, but its also good in multiplayer to go into a balanced battle sometimes.

I think I've solved this. If you open the scenario0.fogsg file in Wordpad and change the scenario name to the same one you used for the edited game (in my case it was "Tunis 255 Balanced" from the original "Tunis 255BC") the changes appear on the battlefield. Not sure if it runs properly, but I'll let you know if it doesn't.
