Gaugamela scenario

Post by TheGrayMouser »

Heres my ist go at a historical scenario
Gaugamela 331 BC

http://www.mediafire.com/?oznz0jjytnj

Disclaimer(s) Probably recommend playing as the Greeks w max handicapp at this time, I have run into an odd issue in that the AI doesnt want to use his chariots or regular cavalry very agressively :?
I also havent decided if the horde of asian Levy troops are hindering the ai as well ( a lot of rout points there!)
Anyway, if anyone tries it out , please comment of any ways to make the scenario more challenging (and please let me know if you can figure out why the AI doesnt want to use his heavies and chariots!)
I used Peter Greens Alexander of Macedon as a primary source.

Played the game and noticed the problem with the chariots.
It was a lot of fun with a wild disorganized melee in the center of the map while lines of infantry close in.
My Alexander was able to break through very quickly and aggressively (auto charge) and attack the troops surrounding Darius' chariot. Alex got two skulls on his unit and was able to flee. One of my other cavalry was able to kill Darius there after.

Thanks for giving it a spin and commenting!
I am still tryng to figure out why the ai wont be agressive with its chariots and hc though... I wonder if it has to do w the map size as I have noticed in other large user made scenarios where the heavy cavalry seems to be "holding back" as well...

Hi!

Thanks for the scenario for my part too!

Question is:

Is the units aggressiveness a function of the maps size?

What settings did you the the leaders? I'm not sure what they do, but if they are set to timid that could be the problem.

I wouldnt go so far as to say yes absolutely, its just a hunch I have from playing... I have noticed a pattern in the ai in the larger user made scenareos where the heavy cavalry units really dont move as agressivley as other units and often dont really engage until the end of the battle. At this stage it seems that suffering anarchy is the only thing that gets them into the mix at all. The official scenareos dont seem to have this problem so much.

Yeah, I tried agrressive overall leader, agressive sub leaders, timid leaders and no sub leaders and all combos of above, none if it offered any noticible change to the chariots, they just sit there like little forts (until they suffer anarchy and charged)

Try placing them behind a ditch! My Roman cavalry just love to charge across it at the advancing Persians in the Dara scenario I'm working on.

Ha ha , seems like you stumbled upon a way to activate a primitive type of AI scripting! Just lay out ditch hex terrain for the pathfinding! Actually I will try this in Gaugamela as it is ashame the chariots just sit their and my understanding is they actually opened the battle with a charge vs the phalanxes.

The horses are too scared to attack the pikes.
Maybe the AI is smart enough to acknowledge this disadvantage. :)

Thanks for the scenario. I noticed that you did not include an elephant unit in the Persian setup. Was this intentional?

It was intentional not to include elephents. I used Peter Greens biography of Alexander and wanted to be consistant in the oob. Although Mr Green indicates that Darius BROUGHT elephants with him and it appears that Alexander captured them once the Persian center fled and the baggage train was overrun, I can find nothing that indicates they actually fought. Perhaps they were brought along as more of a ceremonial addon? or maybe even posted in the rear as a reserve? I feel if Darius had thought they were battleworthy, he would have posted them in the front line to freak out Alexanders cavalry units. Of course this could have been a problem for the Persians horse as well as it is not clear how much time he had to integrate all the forces he scraped together.

Thanks for checking out the scenario!
Cheers
