Well Montreal lost in overtime, and the Leafs actually beat the best team in the league (?!?!), so by the time the Canucks won a hard fought game in which the Wild very nearly forced overtime, the boys in blue and greens win felt like a small victory in a losing war against the forces of darkness.

But a win is a win, espeacially against teams in your division, so by the end of the game I was pretty darn excited. It was a great game with chances going either way and the final result unknown until the final whistle. Minnesota proved that sometimes pulling the goalie does indeed work, when they got to within a goal towards the end of the third period very nearly forcing overtime and my boyparts to withdraw into my torso out of fear.

With 36 points the Canucks sit 10th in the west (2 points and 2 teams away from a playoff spot) almost half way through the season one has to wonder if the long homegame stretch we are just begining will be enough to cushion the two epic roadtrips that will be bookending the Olympic break. To paraphrase Neil Young, it would seem its getting down, to the wire.

Oh man did the Canucks ever win a clutch home game tonight. Earlier this evening your beloved Vancouver Canucks hosted the high flying LA Kings. A team that came into tonight first in the Western (read: Brutal/Real) Conference, with the possibility of capturing first place in the entire league. No small feat for a team that looked like it would be lucky to make the playoffs at the begining of this year.

It was heck of a game and a fine example of why I so love the sport, fast paced, brutal, skilled and savage. With the final result in question until the last minutes of the game. If you like soccer you should watch an NHL hockey game, its like soccer (which I also love) but with weapons more speed and a couple fist fights thrown in for good measure.

So your beloved Vancouver Canucks wrapped up their 8 game home stand 6 and 2 last night. Thankfully they seem to have finally taken a step towards breaking there despairing habit of destroying the better teams in the league (LA kings, Washington Capitals) and losing to the bottom feeders (St Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes), by ragdolling the Edmonton Oilers (Coilers) last night 4 to 1. Which if your interested put us into 8th place in the west, which is the lowest ranking playoff spot. Sure we have only played 38 of 82 games, but your average Canadian will stop holding his/her breath when their team gets into a playoff berth.

For many many years (at least the almost 30 years I have been a fan) our Canucks have had the habit of playing to the level of there opponents, and losing to horrid teams and gobsmacking the high flying ones. Although we can only hope that last nights victoy was pattern forming, it was a nice change.

I often wonder if this is common in other sports? Maybe respond to this post if you follow an unrelated team in an unrelated sport and have noticed this trend.

But we got an interesting game tonight as we will be playing in Calgary against our most hated rivals the Flames. Why do we hate them? Because we have faced each other in the playoffs more than anyother team and for us (Canucknuckleheads) they are our closest team at a brief walk of 1057km (660 miles) over the always mild weather of the Rockie mountains. Should be a good game, which is likely why the dark gods of Capitalism decreed that it would be pay per view, sigh......

We are all Canucks
Nous somme tout Canucks

5 - 1 Canucks !!!!!

We advance to 7th place in the west, in the act putting the hated Flames into 8th.

Great game, Mason Raymond scored his first hat trick (3 goals), and his second was a hilarious mishap wherein he scored just inside the blueline and chased allstar Finnish goalie Mikka Kiprusoff out of the net.

Its good to see the good guys win.

p.s. 150 odd views and I am the only one posting? Come on, some of you are interested in Hockey, lets here from you.
