Viking Army List

Post by guthroth »

Hi

I fought an enjoyable first game with my Vikings on Friday, but the army list left me a little perplexed.

Freemen - the bulk of the army - are only available in BG of 8 or 9 (8 HF or 6HF + 3LF third rank). These two types of BG cost 56 or 57 points, and that's it. If you take the three Huscarl units, an 800 point Viking army has very few options in terms of how many BG it can end up with.

As is far as I can see, for 800 points you have to end up with 9, 10 or 11 and that's it.

If I eliminate one unit of Huscarls and some archer LF, I only get enough points for 2 Freemen BG's, unless I also remove a TC - reducing them to 3 commanders

Can I ask why there is no option for Freemen units to come in 6's ?

Because after the first 3 army list books were released the authors realised that armies made up of multiple small units (AKA Dom Roms / skythian swarm etc) kinda break the rules by being too resilient, and in some cases are also too maneuverable - especially for a lumpy "we foemed a line and fought like that" army like the Vikings were historically.

So they largely got rid of them.

Apart from the Anglo-Danish obviously, who can have loads of BG's in fours.

Having tried said army I can confirm that 8's are much, much better.

Tim - you need to change your sig to:

"Just because I think they are all out to get me, that doesn't mean to say they're not"

A small trick is to take your Huscarls with BG's of 4 HF and 2 LF. This gives you additional BG's and they are still fairly tough AND gives you more BG's of Huscarls.

I have:
3 BG's of Freemen in 8's
3 BG's of Huscarls as above
1 BG of 6 Huscarls
4 BG's of 4 Bretons
1 bg of LF Vikings

12 bg's with an IC - so you can drop him and have a 13th if that swings your boat.

Personal with armies of only 12 BGs I find that 3 commanders is enough, ideally I use an IC and two TCs but some times a FC and two TCs if points are an issue. Certainly I never fight with the IC his job is for CMT and help out of shooting CT, the TCs get paid to lead from the front and occasionally die.
