I built mine with a centurion, standard bearer, officer, and musician for each unit (4 stands of 4 each - 16 figures per unit). Then I armed 7 with pilums to put in the two rear stands with the centurion. The standard bearer, officer, and musician are in the front two stands, and with them, the remaining 5 figures are sword armed. This works for me because I build my units with 4 stands each.

I built 2 boxes. and I split them like this:
Front rank: Centerion (sideways crest in my army) Standard, Corncian (sp, Horn guy) and 1 legionirre with either a pila resting on the ground (non throwing) or a Legionnare stabing/slashing. The other 4 in the front rank mimmick the one on the command stand either sword or resting Pila.
Rear rank is the Opito (other command type) and either 7 throwing Pila or 7 with swords.
I almost would have liked to do the whole front rank stabbing and rear rank throwing but, you do not have enough throwing arms. Mounting the 4 to a 60mmx30mm base they fit nicely and units can get base to base with them. In the rear of the throwing, sometimes not so good. But I don't plan to have my enemy back there.
Hope this helps, my advice is arm the each rank the same sword or pila. I really like the stabbing over the shield pose reminds me of the opening scene in HBOs Rome. And having the rear ranks throwing pilas over there head makes the unit look really like it is going to smash Gallic heads.

The only thing I would add is that centurions fought usually in the extreme right of the formation, the hardest position. Regarding standard bearer and cornicen, they were next to each other. One transmitted the orders and the other "made them aloud"
In Osprey's book, the Roman legionary, it is written that standard bearers usually fought in front ranks, but it is also likely that they were not in the front rank at the very begining risking to lose the standard very soon. Do not forget to put an optio in the rear rank. I like when command miniatures are based as they were positioned to in Ancient times. Enjoy your Romans!

One thing to try in a situation using what is available in multiple boxes to have one unit fighting and another unit at rest.irondog068 wrote:I almost would have liked to do the whole front rank stabbing and rear rank throwing but, you do not have enough throwing arms. I do something similar
Alothough I have the horn and the standard on the right of their stands with three regular legion guys with each of them. The they are always in front of each other. on my third stand is a Centurion on the right and on the fourth stand is another officer on the right
I also group all legions in groups of 4 stands - with 4 groups of 4 stands to a "Legion" - at one time I had 16 "Legions" of 16 stands each - in 15mm - I change chield patterns very 16 stands - that way you can have a bunch of different Romans on the field and tell them apart
