Calculating PoA for impact combat (initial charge)

Post by Squishy »

I am having a hard time understanding the PoA calculations for impact combat. For the following combat situation I set up in a single player game, can someone lay out what modifiers apply and how they add up? I've gone through the help and I can't reproduce the results the computer shows it is using. Thanks for any help.

Charging unit: Average undrilled, Protected Medium Foot, Steady, Impact foot / swordsmen

Unit being attacked: Average undrilled, Protected Cavalry, Steady, Light Spear / swordsmen

Impact Foot charging against any mounted, unless charging shock mounted should be at + according to the miniature rule book. Not sure how this varies for the PC version.

Light Spear mounted versus any is a + if no other net POAs.

I forgot to mention: the computer ended up with foot group (chargers) at - and the mounted group (target) at +.

In the impact PoA table, I see a +1 for impact vs non-shock troop mounted (puts charger at +1 in my example).

I also see a +1 for mounted vs any light foot, but the rules imply this only applies if the mounted group was the charger.

Finally, I see (as CharlesRobinson noted), a +1 for the mounted group with light spear if no other net PoA's apply, but again the rules imply this only applies if the mounted group was the charger.

Originally, I thought that only the first modifier applied because the second and third only applied if the mounted group was the attacker. If the second and third mods apply even though the mounted guys aren't the chargers, then I can see how the mounted targets are at +, and therefore the foot chargers are at -.

Any other opinions out there?

Actually, mounted vs any medium or light is +

To me the + for impact foot would cancel out the + for cavalry vs medium and the light spear mounted would not count because the cavalry already had a +, but then again, since the impact foot and the cavalry vs medium cancels each other out then the + for light spear may give the cavarly it +. I guess it also depends on which order the computer program assesses the POAs.

Yep, you are correct, the PoA table says +1 for mounted vs light/medium foot. It also has it listed under the heading of "if the charger is a..." That's what is confusing me. As I read the Impact PoA table in the help, the +1 for mounted vs light/medium foot applies only if the mounted group is the charger, which in my example it is not. However, the computer *seems* to be applying that modifier. Which ultimately means I'm having a hard time figuring out what the modifiers are going to be *before* I charge into battle :D

I've been setting up various attack setups so I can try and understand how the modifiers work, but it would be easier if I had a PoA table that was clearer.

Thanks for the help. Despite my difficulty in understanding the modifiers, I'm enjoying the game.
