I want a horde!

Post by Tenente_Paco »

Hi there,

I'm a real noob and I would like to ask which is the most huge army. I do like armies with a lot if pieces!
Around here people play with 850pts.
I don't care that much about being competitive. What I like is to put a lot of minis on the table and to amaze my enemies
Any hints?

thx for help

Spartacus Revolt would be in the list of what you seek. Or possibly Early Crusader too.

Think of Spartacus Slave Revolt.

50 possible bases for 2 points each, up to 104 4-point-mob-bases.
So you have 350 points left to fill up with 7- or 9-point bases.

Nearly 200 bases are possible.

Spartacus... good I'll consider that!

What about Early Crusader?
I looked at the list but I didn't feel that it was a mob army!
Were they not knights and stuff??

Thnx for help!

Another fairly impressive sized force is Early Libyan or to be honest a lot of the other early armies in Softer than Beagles.

I used a 650 point Early Libyan with an IC, 2 TCs, 4 chariots, 52 bases of MF and 38 bases of LF in 13 BGs

Some of the Chocolate and Tinsel armies in B&G look to be quite big at 800 points.

Sinhalese (Hindu Indian) from Empires of the Dragon can be huge, with lots of poor unprotected bow, and you get Elephants as well!

Immortal fire, you can have up to 112 bases of poor unarmoured medium foot bows at 5 points apiece, if you use the from 1 AD option they drop to 3 points each. You have to have some elephants and at least 4 cav stands but the rest is cheap shooty stuff. Also medium foot are cheaper to do up then mobs due to the number of figs you need for each base, I am working on a mob for my Selucids, will be the most expensive unit to buy at the cheapest points in my army.

Or how about Southern Dynasties Chinese, with lots of poor medium foot. Here's my attempt at a Chinese horde list:

Conscript close fighters – MF/Prot/Poor/Undr/HW - 8 BGs of 8 bases
Conscript archers – MF/Unprot/Poor/Undr/Bw – 4 BGs of 6 bases
Conscript X bows –MF/Unprot/Poor/Undr/XBw – 2 BGs of 6 bases
Mixed swordsmen/archer units – ½ MF/Prot/Poor/Undr/Sword, ½ MF/Prot/Poor/Undr/Bw – 2 BGs of 8 bases
Drilled close fighters - MF/Prot/Ave/Dr/HW – 1 BG of 8 bases
Spearmen - MF/Prot/Ave/Undr/OffSp – 1 BG of 8 Bases

Inspired commander and 3 TCs = 797 points. 18 battlegroups total.

You could up the number of troops/BGs even more by dropping some of the close fighters and replacing with even more cheap and nasty archers or crossbowmen. And if you wanted to treat yourself you could have some cataphracts or elephants.

[/list]

Hi there,

you guys are actually talking about armies I've never heard before! I have to read a bit around before deciding.
Anyway thanks a lot for help and I'll let you know what I have decided!

I faced Picts last night. They can have a load of U/P MF Off Spear at 6 points each, with pretty good supports (chariots and LH). Can be a very good army in a lot of match-ups.

Early Achaemenid Persian
All the history describes their armies as enormous million-man affairs (all lies of course).
And really, not that bad an army if you fill it up with lots of cheap foot and ignore the fancy toys. You can actually darken the sky with arrows.
The king of kings is great for a centerpiece figure, some royal guardsmen and cavalry, the immortals and hordes of protected MF bow. Add some less than enthusiastic subjects and you have the beginning of a horde.

That's what I'd do if I had room in my cabinet.

From the Blood and Gold lists there are a couple of real bulk armies:

Tarascan can have 26 BGs of 3 point rubbish bow (6 bases to a BG)

Mound Builder can have 72 bases of 2 point light spear medium foot and 64 bases of rubbish MF or LF bow.
