Overlaps moving and still fighting as an overlap

Post by lionheartrjc »

Had a situation at Warfare. I had a unit of spearmen in column who were fighting as an overlap. Can they move forward in their normal movement phase and still fight as an overlap against the same unit? After their normal move some elements were still eligble to fight as an overlap. My opponent wouldn't allow it and I didn't argue the point at the time. Page 50 suggests you can "move normally in the manouvre phase or continue to fight against its existing opponents in the next melee phase." - does this prevent doing both in the same turn?

I think that you can. Or at least there is nothing to stop you doing so.

Well if a base moved forward it would not be fighting against existing opponenet, It would probably no longer have any. Those behind would be fighting it. If bases are in a position to overlap they fight IMO.

I believe the overlap rules are that as long as you are in front corner to corner or side to side base contact you can still fight as an overlap so it would depend on how far forward you moved. If only your rear rank was still in side base contact I guess they would fight without the front bases adding dice. Now if they were drilled or you got reallylucky next turn and turned 90 degrees... flank charge time :)

Although you cannot turn into a flank if you are adding dice. Yoy have to move forwards and away, spending 2 turns out of the melee, then charge in the flank. A risky business.

Thanks for the responses.

Turning to flank was not an option, there was an enemy unit of spearmen to their front (although too far away to stop the column advancing).
