Callan dies

Post by Scrumpy »

Edward Woodward who played tv's most famous wargamer died over the weekend. In the 60s/70s hit show he played a spy who loved to game in his off-time from being an embittered man who performs his duties "for Queen and country" under duress.

I think I read one of the novels back in the day. Wargaming was really woven into the thread of the narrative, as a parallel development of the intrigue. His gaming opponent was also his mark. Not many novels I can remember from over 30 years ago.

Sad news regarding Mr. Woodward.

Edward Woodward was often seen at wargaming shows during the 1970's/80's. He had a TV series he presented about Wargaming, I think it was called 'Battlegrounds' Apparently he had a large collection of wargaming figures and various tables, which can be seen in episodes of some of the TV series he was in, as well as the film version of 'Callan'.

Watching Callan as a child was the first awareness I had of such a thing as wargaming.

Very sad to hear of his passing.

Beats being burned as a sacrifice

He also deserves remembrance for his excellent performances in the original Wicker Man and in Breaker Morant. At least going as he did beats being burned at an earlier age ;-).
