FM dismounting question

Post by babyshark »

When do flank marchers commit to dismounting?

Can a BG that is capable of dismounting dice for arrival as Cav, then deploy on the board as foot? My initial thought is no, as they have already used their mounted nature; on the other hand, I can find nothing in the rules to support this (or negate it, for that matter).

Any thoughts?

It may dismount when it deploys on the table, which it does by moving on, whether onto the enemy's side or if pushed back. So pull them out of the box as mounted or afoot and move on accordingly. Or am I missing an issue?

I don;t think that troops on an outflanking march can dismout when they arrive. I may well be wrong and that is just an off the top of my head thought but I think it is right.

I was just looking at 147.

Riding to battle via flank march and then dismounting makes a lot of sense, if only to rest the horses. Dismounting before the flank march and walking the whole way sounds odd, even suspicious.

It does say "When first deployed on the table".

The section on "Outflanking marches" never mentions deploying, it only mentions "arriving". The section on "Deployment" states that BG on outflanking marches are omitted.

Hence BG on outflanking marches are never deployed and thus miss out on the opportunity to dismount "When first deployed on the table".

They can dismount using the second bullet (after all non-ambushing on-table troops have deployed) but then would be on foot while flank marching.

Can troops in ambush use the second bullet to dismount, I wonder?
