Interesting report. Reading your comments one thing to note is that there is no way to disengage skirmishers once they are fighting. One side or the other will break.

This is always something to consider in your skirmishing plans and one way to slow down an enemy is to start a big skirmisher fight in the middle of the table. Of course there are some risks involved in trying this, but something to consider.

One of the problems with the big skirmisher fight is it can take forever and holds up both your main battle lines waiting for one side to break and clear off.
Remember you can use double moves with battle lines and generals, helps to move across the table faster.
Also you can double move your skirmishers up try to get them within 6 Mu of the enemy and then he can't use double moves while your own battle line rushes up to where you want.
Too bad you couldnt get into the nitty gritty of the main battle lines, it would be interesting to see how carthage would have fared against Roman scum (obvious non-Roman player here)

Thanks for the replies. I think if I'd known the rules a little better I'd probably have been a little more wary of the big skirmishers fight. I do find it hard to think that the might of two armies would sit around waiting for the skirmishers to finish their spat? Maybe there SHOULD be a way for skirmishers to break off?

I also think we had too many troops on the table for our level of experience. The big problem, as ever is finding time to play enough games to get a good grounding in the rules...

I have a 3 BGs of Gauls arriving soon so will play around with the troop proportions and try again in the new year.

Cheers

The thing is LF were not known for fighting HTH. So standing just beyond arms length and throwing stones at each other makes them work properly.
If they could easily break off they would be fighting to the death all over the place. The way the rules work encourages that not to happen. Unless you are not sure about the rules.
My LF only get into HTH if they have a big advantage or get caught in the arse.

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!

I think most of us have gotten into the big skirmish battle in our first game, and learned not to do it again later, unless as has been pointed out you have an advantage or by pinning his skirmishers in combat you can bring some main battle line unit into it that should tilt the advantage into your favour.
