Just as Legion is a tactical simulation- so too do I want to see a realistic space simulation combat game. I suggest near future because warp drives and phasers and aliens is not what I am interested in- although some senarioes with an alien come to this solar system might be interesting.
What would the space weapons of 2050 or 2100 be like as an outgrowth of the current political and technical trends? Surely you have the nuclear missile, stealth vessels, chemical and ion drives, but you also have a huge and dynamic playing field- an accurately modeled solar system. No one I know of has a simulation for this kind of combat- except perhaps the pentagon. The playing field would have to be populated with mines and colonies or something worth fighting for that do not currently exist, but the high ground has always been important in fights.
Many senarios suggest themselves- asteriod colonies verses the earth for independence, intecorporate warfare, even a NASA mission planner to but probes where they need to go, saving the earth from comets, a Mars/Earth conflict. Of course, the catch would be to make it realistic- with fuel, mass, velocity, time, distance, gravity being part of the mix. I imagine some parts of the game may be a little like the submarine combat games- the ones I remember are Hunt for Red October type titles from the late 80s/early 90s. And part of the game could be designing space warcraft too- at least in terms of system components within realistic constraints.
Have I gone into enough detail? Email me if you have any more questions.
