Sumerian Figure manfacturers

Post by expendablecinc »

My next completely new army is likely to be sumerian/Akadian and I am currently looking into figure availability.

The only two manufacturers I can find are chariot and essex.

What are peoples estimates of these in terms of - variation in pose / will they mix?

Both look ok in online pics.

For the defensive spearmen having them all the same pose is fine but for the royal guard and offensive spear it woudl be good if there was a bit of variety - particularly if the pose is dynamic.

The Army list looks a treat. Large army, lots of BG without them being too small and with 32 bases of superior troops!

Those two manufacturers can be mixed, but look like an adolescent runner (xChariot) next to his weightlifter dad (Essex). The war carts may give the most problem, with xChariots looking like burros and Essex looking like mules. Personally I would go with the smaller minis for the carts, but that is entirely a matter of tastes.

SKT used to make a fairly extensive line of Sumerians and Akkadians back in the day, but they were very crude. Probably nigh impossible to find and not really worth the effort. I have a few mixed SKT Thracians mixed in with Donnington, Museum, Essex and xChariot figures. They work well together. Very busy paint schemes help pull them together though, and the Sumerians would be rather plain.

It seems to me there was another manufacturer for the Sumerians, but I cannot quite recall them. I may be mistaken.

Falcon, if you can get them:

http://www.falconfigures.com/

Several years ago I bought a bunch of Skythians from Kai at Falcon USA with no problem. Since then, others have reported extreme difficulty in communicatons and deliveries and that the difficulties have since been resolved - some health issues IIRC. I can't say - I only ordered once and had no problems at all. I phoned in the order using a credit card.

The Falcon Skythians were arguably second tier in terms of sculpting - some odd proportions and a simple style. The poses were historically accurate, varied and energetic however, and more than made up for any deficiencies. I am very happy with them. I have never seen the Sumerians / Akkadians.
Caveat emptor.

This might be of interest. The Eureka 300 (or is it 500?) club:

Either of these lines would serve to bridge the scale and bulk difference between Chariot and Essex.

Dares to speak Heresy here....
I believe Hat does make Summerians, but I could be wrong. Just a thought if your looking for cheap figs that are easy to carry.

Thanks but for me they arent worth the time painting them. Ive got a lot of 1/72 scale and have never rolled a dice with them in anger - no opponents.

I have 2 DBA armies for these, along with one of the allies, and I think down the road,it will be an option to expand to FOG size for them. However, all my figs are Essex, and they dont make the straddle car, only the cart,so far as I know. Angry donkey carts failing cmt's can only mean one thing-they simply choose not to go where you want them.

I think one BG of straddle carts to skirmish with is ok ut wouldnt take any more chariots than that. Average chariots as fighting troops is asking for trouble against most enemy opponents apart from other vulnerable MF and the sumerians have much better troops (superiro MF) to tackle them with.
