Hello everyone,
I have been lurking around this forum after hearing about this game but am still not sure whether to get it or not?
Would someone answer me these questions:
1. How linear/nonlinear is the campaign? I get the impression it is just a case of choosing different battles from the map and replaying them until you win, am I correct?
2. Are the battles turn based WEGO, a bit like Combat mission or out and out RTS?
3. If you can keep playing battles until you win how do you lose the game/campaign?
4. Is the game actually released or are we paying £24.99 to take part in the beta before proper release in Feb 2010?
Thanks in advance.
A few questions

I've had the game for a few days now and played through to the Battle of Crecy so I think I'm still pretty early on in the first (English) campaign but from what I've seen so far
1. Fairly linear but you usually have 1-2 options as to which major battle to fight next and always have the option to do a small skirmish/raid (mainly used to get a bit more gold (for equipment) or experience prior to taking on your next main battle). On top of this there are a lot of options as to how you equip and develop your troops as well as how many troops you actually have meaning you also have to think about quality vs quantity.
2. I find it closer to CM than an normal type of RTS tough rather than distinct 60 second turns it is continuous but can and will be paused at any moment to issue new orders as required. I usually play turn based games rather than RTS and feel quiet confortable with the pace of action in GBM.
3. Yes. Each main battle can be replayed until you win it which will the advance the campaign to the next main battle or set of main battles and you can repeatedly play the skirmish/raid battles as often as you want to build up you troops.
4. It is a finished game but I'm sure it will be patched if neccesary and also would seem to have a lot of potential for user made scenarios, campaigns and mods.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.
I think I'm slightly disappointed with the way the campaign seems to work. From this statement from one the moderators I was under the impression that it was very strategic at the map level: We are designing the game with a pretty freeform high level structure, one which should ensure a lot of replayability.
Not sure what freeform high level structure means but it does sound as though you can do what you like, sort of thing.
However the map screen appears to be just a means of choosing the next battle from an ever increasing list as the game goes on.
I think I might wait a bit to see some reviews. As an aside has anyone seen the King Arthur game that is coming out soon: www.kingarthurthewargame.com
It does look rather good and I think it is coming out soon.

The map is free form - options brach out for you. It is not a resource management game or empire builder. It is all about choosing which missions to fight and when. Later on you will have a lot of options. Think of something like Baldurs Gate where you have key missions you have to complete and lots of optional missions for extra rewards. No problem discussing other games but please keep it to the general discussions forum. This forum is for GBM. Thanks!
The replayability comes mostly from trying to fight battles with less casualties or, perhaps more importantly, a different core of units.
direwolf has restarted his campaign several times to see how different combinations of units would work, so he's enjoying the same couple of battles multiple times.
