Hi All,
I would definitely like to understand this better...i can understand where cards or other items might be unlocked as a reward but i don't think it's a good idea for a PRIMARY weapon. I mean to spend skill points in developing Lance skills to not know whether you'll actually ever get the weapon doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, besides the fact that it significantly impacts Cavalry as a viable force.
cheers,
DW

Com,
Sorry m8, i guess we were both posting at the same time...i'll take a moment to update on a couple of fronts which will also answer your question in regards to my cav.
First, the difficulty aspect of the game...i completely agree with Com...it's fine don't change a thing. The fact that i was having such difficulty forced me to change my approach with much better results...
I started a new game with the following composition (Still early but battles are going MUCH better now)
4 men at arms that are Spear specialized (I Will probably expand to 6)...these are my tanks they "hold the line".
2 men at arms that are axe/hammer specialized (i.e. melee wep upgrades vs. sword). These are my "flankers"...once the line engages i bring them around and they wreak HAVOC. (Will probably expand to 4)
2 mounted men at arms specialized in melee weps and Lance (again, until lance becomes available they utilize axe/hammer)...once my line and flankers have engages i bring the cav around the rear.
2 Archers that have specialized in archer/guns. I have moved away from developing archer units because in the latter parts of the game they have almost no effect against hvy armor. (Will probably expand to 4)
1 General.
So i have a "core" army of 9 units that expands to 15...9-10 is probably the right core because that is the limit in some of the later missions.
so far so good but we'll see.
cheers,
DW

I checked to make sure but the lance is unlocked after Poitiers which is a key mission. Not sure if this is a bug but i'm at the battle of mercq (May 1405) and have not gotten access to lances yet. the sense i get from Com's posting is that Lances should have become available some time ago.
Am i wrong or missing something?
Can you check if the lance is available after purchasing a new cavalry unit (for that new unit only)? IIRC there was a bug with this happening sometimes, I think it was fixed but not certain.
I'm hoping the handcannon will blow through armour even in the later parts of the game.
I've finished the mission where I had to break through French lines without having one of my units routing on me. It was a pretty close call, but in the end everything worked.
Unfortunately, I stumbled right into another annoying mission, one that is annoying due to its setup.
In "Rescue the Hostages", there are three AI units stuck in a position surrounded by French units on the map. If ANYTHING touches them, you seem to lose. It would be sensible that you would only lose if the French would kill the unit, or take its victory hex.
Now, I rout a French unit which runs north, it becomes shaken up right next to the hostages, it attacks for a few seconds, I lose. I'm wondering how often that's going to happen.
A timer would be greatly appreciated for these missions, or any indication of the time I have in the briefing.
I'm enjoying the game a lot, but a few annoying missions that are fun on paper but can turn sour due to some unforseen elements does have a negative impact on my gaming experience, and quite possibly on that of others too.

you can "free" the hostages by getting a unit next to them. You should focus on that asap, because it nolonger matters if they take losses after you have freed them.In "Rescue the Hostages", there are three AI units stuck in a position surrounded by French units on the map. Two other things...
1) Did you see i got promoted to "Javlinman"...sweet...my mama always said i would grow up and make something of myself.
2) Any news on why i didn't get Lances when i should have? (Or how to get them now w/out restarting)
Thx!
DW
p.s. I think that Com and i should have a standing invitation as beta testers for future games on this engine...it's obvious we'll test the heck out of it!!!

The idea is good an interesting, I was just a bit annoyed that a French unit became shaken right next to them and attacked, which instantly costs me the mission. As a safeguard against that, perhaps the unit should be allowed to take some casualties, by making the victory square the key factor, which means you won't lose until the unit is routed.you can "free" the hostages by getting a unit next to them. You should focus on that asap, because it nolonger matters if they take losses after you have freed them.
For hostages, the units also have pretty good weapons, perhaps they should only carry clubs.
direwolf: good games deserve to be supported, it's my pleasure to thank good developers for making good games, by giving them support and by trying to improve the product by pointing out some parts of the game that could use a bit more polish.
The good thing about what we're doing is that when this hits major retailers as a physical shipment, it could be patched, making the experience more enjoyable for our fellow gamers across the world.
Also, by that time people will wonder how the hell us two and some other guys got such high rankings on the ladder. It feels good to be involved with a game more or less from retail, especially with a game that caters to a niche market and doesn't have a halfway sentient fanboy crowd on their forums.
Com,
I just fought a battle at Poiters where i had to protect a baggage train in the south and some assorted victory hexes around the map. Is this the battle which unlocked Lances for you?
My result was:
300 gold from a wagon
unlocking of battle axe
unlocking of large shield
I also got a VERY strange on screen message that said "Tournament Unlocked"...i would really like to know what that is all about.
pls advise.
thx,
DW

New battle unlocked i think from the message "Tournament unlocked"...back on strategic map i had a new battle option "Duel Begins" very interesting battle with only the 2 general units facing off against each other surrounded by other units that watch on.
Reward: 3 new battle cards (Never before seen)
500 gold.

You might've unlocked something due to either your wins or the amount of battles played thus far, I'm not sure.
The battle of Poitiers I was referring to has some victory squares that you need to hold "or your troops might panic" and some defensible squares and lots of French knights, on foot or on horse, the French king (John II) and an Order of the Star unit.

I didn't think anyone would find it this fast. You guys don't miss anything do you?
Some days, I think games are out to get me.
First, another game keeps crashing on me.
After that, routed French crossbowmen become shaken next to the hostages in the rescue the hostages mission and I lose.
On the second try today, I rescue the hostages, but the French units just sit still on the map, they don't attack, Anyway, I win the mission.
The first two tries at Mercq failed. The third try was going very well, and then the game crashed. My first CTD.

French Campaign
Hey Comradep,
I have been playing the French Campaign almost exclusively. Its pretty tough. The English seem to get very strong forces while I am using Lt. Infantry. Oh well, my rankings aren't that great but I really like the game.
No one it seems has done a multi-player game. How do we coordinate?
