Charge declaration

Post by list_lurker »

Hi - should be an easy one...

In the charge declaration the target must be 'visible'. Does that 'visible to' apply to the charging BG? or is it just visible per se?

Ta

Are come other BGs of your opponent invisible per se? and how many points do they pay for this. I guess it wil save time painting.

Maybe I should clarify.

What I mean is that can I declare a charge if the target is blocked by friends (who you can interpenetrate legally)

It equally could apply to troops are in terrain that reduces visibilty. Where one BG can see them - but are 'invisible' to the the chargers becuase of distance

You certainly can't charge through friends (even if you can legally interpenetrate them). You also have to be able to see your intended target.

Pg 47

"No interpenetrations are allowed when charging."

Pg 52

"To be allowed to declare a charge there must be a visible enemy that can be legally contacted"

To be allowed to declare a charge there must be a visible enemy that can be legally contacted

the key to this line is the context of the 'visibility', there is no implication of whether this applies to the 'charger'

If you'd quoted the whole sentance you'd see it goes on to say "... by the charging battle group ..." which, IMO, provides enough to say that the prospective charges must have visible enemy.

If you can't see it there is no incentive to charge it.
Battlegroups are not likely to want to just charge about the table hoping they migh run into something :?

"... by the charging battle group ..."
I thought that applied the 2nd element of the sentence - 'legally contacted by the charging element'

However, everyone thinks that the BG should be able to see to charge , so that good enough for me! :D

Also note that the rules for testing not to charge specify that shock troops must test not to charge enemy they could contact by interpenetrating friends but cannot voluntarily charge those targets.

As far as I know, the rules don't specify anything about friends blocking visibility of enemy BGs. If they do block then it would have a major effect on shock troops testing not to charge or having to burst through friends.

This does draw an interesting parallel.

I think the voluntary charge interpenetation is a neccessary evil to stop absusive use of LF ablative screens from shooting

You can't vluntarily charge through your friendly screen of light troops. Shock troops however might just lose it and go through them without thinking out the possible consequences. An odd situation where you might find your troops charging off through the light screen without orders but you can't order them to do the same thing.

It would be fun though if you wanted to simulate being a swine general. Just like letting you shoot at enemy in combat but rolling to see if the hits are on your BG or the enemy's.
