Division D
teodor6100 (Arab) defeats DocVanNostrand (Bulgarian) 34-65.
This should be the last game for me in this tournament. I had hoped to do better than that, but it was not to be. Maybe it will still be enough to win in this division. Good games!

Div B
alexhstandish (Thracian Getae) defreats nyczar (Thracian Trballi) 12 :42
Fearing that the Getae could not match the Triballi mass warbands, the Getae maxed out on LH, LI and cavalry, leaving their medium infanty in reserve.
Fortuanately, the Triballi focussed their warbands against a steep hill on their right flank, thereby allowing the numerous Getae lights to swarm the Triballi left flank. Having shot up the opposing lights and some medium spear, the Getae cavalry managed to swing round behind the enemy line.
In the meantime, the Getae lancers (with some help from the reserve infantry) had done enough to fight and hold off a large quantity of medium foot, with the cavalry flank move getting enough kills to seal the day.
A very interesting (and much closer than the result shows) battle, thanks nyczar.

A famous game of hide and seek, ending with a very close score, on turn 24. The general of the Nobatae had little desire to rub shoulders with the heavy Arab infantry on open ground. So he decided to lay many ambushes in the fog of war.
It was almost a winning strategy, but its left wing of diversion was savagely broken and allowed the Arabs to claim victory (by points, without glory).

Division B
Jtrillodmp (Arabs) defeats Markleslie (Persians) 64-59.
A closely fought battle right up to the final turn, in which the Arabs managed to hold off the onslaught of the Dailami infantry and, little by little, began to win engagements of their own with their veteran Dailami troops. The marshy terrain hampered the mobility of both armies, but even so, the cavalry also played an active role in areas where conditions allowed. A truly entertaining battle, given just how closely contested it was.

Division B
markleslie Pergamene 190-129 BC defeats Ironclad Bithynian 297-74 BC 60-30.
The armies and the terrain seemed to be pushing for a rumble in and around the hills and that looks to be our destiny.

At this point I was confident to advance everywhere, it was also when events began diverting from script.

Despite my elephant foolishly chasing a skirmisher that left it in a position to be m(r)obbed by Bithynian Bandits, my left dominated with numbers then turned on the centre. Our brave right got the better of the enemy but became bogged down in melees while our centre was roundly thrashed by the rampant Bithynian rhomphaias who drove back and destroyed most of my thureophoroi; only the pressure of our flanks turning inward at the close of the battle brought this fracas to a messy end.

Well played and salute!

Division B
Ironclad Pergamene 190-129 BC defeated markleslie Bithynian 297-74 BC, 54-29
The Pergamenes advanced behind a light infantry screen to take the nearest dominant rough hill with their medium infantry, whilst their heavies comprising warbands and pike units moved forward adjacent to them on the open plain with heavy and light cavalry on the right. The Bithynians challenged the hill offensive with their own mediums and flanking lights through the neighbouring high ground.
A fierce fight resulted on the hill as mediums and lights were thrown into the action in increasing numbers. Meanwhile the Pergamene heavy infantry and cavalry concentrated to attack the nearest Bithynian warbands to take advantage of their local superiority. In turn the Bithynians responded by using their cavalry and available mediums to bring heavy pressure on the Pergamene right flank which had been dangerously thinned out.
The Pergamene successfully secured the hill routing several of the enemy units facing them. Their attack against the enemy centre met good fortune at the start with a couple of disruptions and with their superior numbers in heavy units the Pergamene forces overwhelmed the opposing defenders achieving final victory. By the close the Bithynian counter-attack on the flank had met considerable success achieving breakthroughs prompting the Pergamese to use their light forces against the mounted intruders.
Thanks to markleslie for a challenging and entertaining contest.

Re: HOML 11 Ancients Results.
Division B
Ironclad Avar 558-631 AD defeated alexhstandish Byzantine 551-578 AD, 66-55
Both armies, each mainly cavalry deployed centrally, with the few close order infantry units present left in or close to flanking woods. The Avars advanced inclining towards the left to focus on the weaker enemy right flank.
The Byzantines using their light cavalry skilfully rolled with the attack whilst counter-attacking in strength in the centre and on their left flank, the latter allowing them to make use of their infantry from the woods particularly their archers. The Avars main body which had advanced to support their left wing attack were exposed to enemy charges from two sides (front and flank) and had to redeploy swiftly to attempt to shore up their flank defence.
As often the case in cavalry battles, the action had broke into a number of separate actions with both sides fairly evenly matched although the Avar two irregular infantry were swiftly dealt with by the better Byzantine infantry when they attempted to join in. A number of fragged mounted units were fortunate to survive repeated enemy attacks and the Avars benefitted particulary in this respect.
With the battle on a knife edge, the Avars managed to break off close combat with engaged legions thereby enabling them to concentrate against some enemy units, launching arrow storms and following up with charges to achieve final victory.
Thanks to Alex for a tough and entertaining fight which could have gone either way and which the Avars were lucky to win

Chris Townsend chose the Greeks (western) to engage with mcfcivo and the Spanish (Lusitanians) under Sertorius.
The otherwise mostly flat map was narrowed by an impassable stream, so the Lusitanian cavalry had to exploit their numerical advantage on the open left flank. My Greeks deployed in an echelon formation deploying their raw hoplites on their left with the flank protected by the stream, and their cavalry in support of a stronger force on their right. Utilizing their skirmishers to help the citizen hoplites keep facing with the maneuverable mercenaries, they expanded to the open flank and contained the Lusitanian cavalry. The clash quickly spread along the whole line in the open plain with the Greets surviving enough of the impact attacks to cause problems.
Eventually the battle descended into individual melees with an end of game rally resulting in Chris Townsend's Greeks defeating mcfcivo's Lusitanians 60-53. It could have gone either way.
In the mirror, the Greeks took a defensive stance, using a large, rough hill to anchor their open right flank. The engagement began slowly, with the Lusitanian light horse chasing their outnumbered counterparts off the map, but then staring at a hilltop defended by Thracian peltasts. Fortunately, Sertorius had deployed a couple of Caetrati on the left flank of his heavies (Romans and warbands), and they advanced towards the Greek right, with a parade ground manoeuvre to pass through the cavalry on their way to defend the gap in the centre (other Caetrati kept their eye on the Greek left).
The heavies managed to batter Greeks that stood in their way, and, while a few slipped through gaps in their lines, there were dealt with by concentrated missile fire from the skirmishers. On the right, the skirmishers also did well delaying the engagement of the troops of the line until the heavies had done their work.
Final result was Chris Townsend's Lusitanians defeating mcfcivo's Greeks 45-14.
Both were good, entertaining games (even if the parade ground manoeuvres sometimes earned boos from the spectators).
