The Egyptians’ superiority on this map was made clear by their second victory. Their combination of chariots and infantry, on a map that suited them very well, gradually turned the tide of the battle, although the Fatimid cavalry put up a spectacular fight.

The Romans feared an army consisting entirely of knights and had taken up positions on a hill. The Papal forces’ advance towards their positions and the harassment by light units motivated most of the legionaries to come down from the hill, leading to an intriguing duel with the dismounted knights. Although hit by enemy stones, the Papal cavalry rose to the challenge and proved decisive in the final hours.

The Syro-Canaanites’ strategy of fielding a massive chariot force paid off, as they were able to defeat the opposing mass of Knights by wearing them down with arrows and outflanking them with their numerous units. The Crusaders’ infantry and crossbowmen could do little to counter this, whilst they were in turn harassed by the chariots and light infantry units.

Solemnace's Genoese defeated Rockmanbob123's Trojans 60-39

The Trojans through skilled maneuvering of their chariots and horsemen were largely able to oumaneuver the Genoese knights and Infantry on the Genoese right. Unfortunately despite a spirited effort the Trojan center and right was largely torn to shreds by the Genoese infantry and knights though not without significant losses for the Genoese in the process.

Solemnace's Hittites draw with Vukteble's Ottomans 60(Hittite Losses)-65(Ottoman Losses)

The Ottomans managed to destroy the Hittite right without much difficulty but the Hittite Chariots routed the Ottoman right and where able to turn towards the center where the Ottoman has the initial advantage in the fighting but lsot ground as the Hittite Chariots arrived. A lucky rally allow the Hittites to hold for one more turn to break a swathe of Ottoman units to shatter their army but the time also allowed the Ottomans to finished off one more Hittite unit to leave the battle as effectively a draw though the Hittites nominally came off slightly better.

The Trojan light infantry was a little too bold for their own health. A few shields and crossbows allowed us to counter a timid charge on our right flank. The heavily armored center plunged cautiously but determinedly into the enemy infantry.

God was on our side but not too much. Many of our infantrymen fell on their swords and our cavalry was a bit too heavy. Fortunately, powder and steel eventually outweighed javelins and sandals.

Our right flank, largely composed of chariots, took care of the light Genoese infantry, under the frightened eyes of oarsmen who, exhausted by days of rowing, could not arrive on time.

Our left flank suffered significant losses but was able to distract a sufficient portion of the opposing infantry to allow our frail center to move forward, very carefully and engage the fierce billmen and some crossbowmen.

Our little reserve of chariots, probably swifter than eagles, and some of those on our right flank, which were still thirsty for glory, completed the encirclement on the plain and dispersed enough Italian to preserve our trading rights.

Great fight! The left flank Hittites spent most of the game ganging up on archer cav and chasing down evading units with their light anatolian spear chariots and support from heavy chariots to face off against the heavier cav. Meanwhile the right flank skirmishers and a smaller chariot force pushed the Ottoman cav back from being able to support their center. The Janissaries held well and saw off all the Hittite foot but started to get wore down and chariot flank attacks on them started equalize the damage they'd done to the Hittite center.

Most of the fighting occurred around this small hill and while I was able to defeat Solemnace's left flank and center, the center managed to hold long enough for some foot and his chariots to start arriving from his victorious right flank. In the second to last turn I had them defeated at 57-60, but a general unit of Gasgan warriors(I think) rallied, bringing us back to 57-57, followed by a successful chain charge on his turn that took me from 57 to 65, but one of his units broke right at the end of his turn forcing the draw. Very much a "If I'm dying I'm taking us both down!" scenario. Very enjoyable.

Timur, looking around at what he had wrought and skulls he had so easily piled up sighed and longed for a real enemy, one of ancient lore. That night a genie whisked him away to face one indeed, the Persian Achaemenids. The Timurids raced their Best Equipped Cav and Expert Horse Archers across the river and started charging and disrupting an all too pervious wall of Sparabara foot while shooting handguns and bombards, and throwing naffatun at Iranian Horse Archers for sport. One of the elephants even got to charge down a heavy chariot. For while the wild range of advanced weaponry seemed to do the trick, but slowly the Achaemenids wore the less numerous Timurids down and it all came down to one turn to decide the winner. Honestly - totally wild match up, great map, excellent opponent. What more is there for one to ask?

I held the center with all my Immortals and some raw hoplites. To their right were my Iranian cav scattered around the rough patches and anchored on the end by the camels. This force faced the majority of the Timurid cavalry supported by irregular foot. The cavalry eventually pushed back my cavalry and chased some of them down, but were delayed by terrain, archer fire from the Iranian cav and harassment by my light cav who had beaten off his right cav. Meanwhile the Immortals shrugged off every disruption and won every fight they fought. On my left flank it was a cagier affair. Lots of massed timurid archers against my light foot, sparabara and some massed archers. The Timurids attempted to turn this flank but were stopped by a force in a small wood. Trapped there they were met by some of my Iranian cav who arrived to reinforce the center and eventually got in a couple good flanks. My light foot saw off two light cav units and did a lot of damage to the massed archers in the riverbed. Very satisfying overall, great lineup - thanks for the fight!

Two results

Rosedelio (Papal) defeats VukTeble (Roman) 59-30

The Papal army suffered some disrupts early on due to the legionary impact. However, they were able to rally back up and let their advanced armor grind through the legions.

The legionaries were able to hold on long enough against the Papal men-at-arms for Roman cav to flank them.

My side of the map was divided left to right into scattered rough ground where I placed medium infantry and light skirmishers, a deep series of enclosures which I filled with massed archers and a couple Syrian spears, a small patch of open ground which had my six Maryannu chariots and a forest with more massed archers and javelins. On loading in I realized ulysisgrunt had no interest in fighting over the rough ground so I spent a fair amount of time bringing my left flank back to the center, but when they arrived they were successful in defeating most of the foot and all of the crossbows. I moved my small force of chariots forward to force a charge by his large force of knights who were arrayed in front of the enclosures and small piece of open ground. This succeeded, and as they chased the chariots they came under enfilade fire from massed archers in the enclosure and the forest.The chariots started getting flank attacks in at this point and some knights charged the enclosure archers, which while shutting them down from firing was overall unsuccessful for the knights. On the far right his turcopoles had some success seeing off my handful of spare chariots and a unit of archers that left the forest to fire at them. Fun match, thanks!

The (Holy) Eternal City opted for "Holy".

The papal forces won both sides of the mirror. In both cases, the fight was similar (even though ulysisgrunt had mounted knights, and I had dismounted knights). The knights didn't break under the initial Roman charge, and won the melee battle of attrition, with the Romans suddenly collapsing as casualties mounted.

With a mountain range running through the middle of the battlefield, both armies had to deploy in two separate formations, one for each flank. In this instance, the Trojans faced a frontal assault from the Genoese, with their dismounted knights supported by handgunners and crossbowmen; whilst there were heavy casualties on both sides. Victory came from the opposite flank, where the cavalry and oarsmen suffered heavily against the Trojan spearmen and chariots. It was a very narrow victory that could easily have gone the other way.

As we didn’t have Odysseus to come up with any stratagems, the Genoese took a gamble by concentrating the bulk of their army on the main front, and although it proved more difficult than anticipated, they ultimately defeated all the Trojan units. Meanwhile, the left flank suffered heavy losses and was decimated, as it was weaker and cut off from the main Genoese army, but its sacrifice and the distraction it provided were instrumental in securing the final victory.

The Timurid's shock & awe tactic had good result in the right wing but the persian's moral was strong.
They managed to wiped out our bold left wing and our cheap infantry.
