Sentorius prepares to return to Rome!

Division C
Chris Townsend Spanish (Sentorius) 80 - 70 BC defeats rockmanbob123 Roman 105-25BC 60-35

On a mostly open battlefield, the Sentorious's Lusitanians took up a position behind the starting line, using terrain for their Caetrati whenever possible, including anchoring their left flank in the lone patch of woods. They deployed their cavalry on their right. The Romans responded with a strong line of legionaries, with their sole medium infantry the only victim of Lusitanian skirmishers. The cavalry fight on the open flank was tactically a draw, with the fight on going at the end of the game. Operationally it meant that, though the Roman heavies crashed into the Caetrati with their usual success, they ended up out flanked on both the returning Lusitanian nobles from the cavalry battle and Caetrati emerging from the woods. Despite some valiant fighting, the legionaries couldn't survive the flank attacks.

Good game!

Division B

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Bagatrix Numidian 55 BC-6 AD with Roman allies, 61-50

The Gallic battleline pushed forward against the opposing enemy close order troops which were bolstered by elephants behind the centre and by a superior cavalry forces on the left and by more numerous light and other infantry on the right. This led to a fierce and exhausting battle which saw the Gallic warbands led by their superior units with their Samnite compatriots eventually overcome the opposition on the centre and right. In this a stirring example was resistance by a lone Saminite unit with chariot support which helped to anchor the extreme right.

Meanwhile the Numidian cavalry both heavy and lights made strong inroads against the Gallic left leading to its destruction.

The climax of the battle then centred on whether the successful Numidian cavalry with remaining infantry support could overwhelm the arriving Gallic infantry reinforcements before sufficient of the latter arrived to turn the tide. In this fierce final struggle (see screenshot) the quality of the Gallic units including a General present made the difference and enabled the victory. Thanks to Bagatrix for a close and exciting battle.

Stones1985 (Selecuid/Parthian) defeated snooky51 (Pyrrhic/Samnite) by a score of 62 to 29.

The game was fairly close with the Seleucids having an edge with the scores at around 45 to 35. But one fortuitous rampaging cavalry charge and an equally lucky rallying pikemen put some clear water bewteen the two armies.

Thanks - good game.

Division B

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Swuul Egyptian 664-571 BC with Assyrian allies, 56-29

This was a hard fought battle, on an extended front across the more open areas of the field. The Gallic army was relying on its infantry which formed the centre and right whilst its cavalry and light chariots on the left had a more difficult task opposing an enemy mounted flank included three heavy chariots.

The infantry fight in particular proved long and exhausting; the Gauls being helped by some isolated breakthroughs but this was offset temporarily by the warbands leavinng the line in pursuit. Meanwhile the mounted battle saw eventual success for the Egyptians but this followed a prolonged struggle which included some infantry support. Consequently the victorious units were not able to influence the outcome of the critical infantry struggle elsewhere.

In terms of losses it was fairly equal for most of the contest and it was only at the end that the balance changed significantly when the Gallic infantry helped by returning units was able to launch a final devastating attack. Thanks to Swuul for a good and enjoyable game.

Division B

Swuul Egyptian 664-571 with Assyrian allies beat SgtOgre Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216-203BC with Bruttian allies 63-55

This was my last match of the season, and I attempted the same tactics as I tried in all other eight matches too: Hope to win on one of the flanks due to having superior numbers (egyptian spearmen are crap, but they are cheap so you get 15 by the dozen) and meanwhile hope the main-line holds long enough. Before this it had worked four times and backfired four times, and this time it once again almost backfired. The egyptian left and center held by the spearmen and heavy chariots crumbled versus the superior carthaginian troops. Until about two turns before the end I was sure I was going to lose, but to my amazement a couple of my fragmented troops held for a turn, and that was in the end all that was needed, as that allowed the egyptian right flank to be *just* fast enough to reach the scene and rob victory from the jaws of defeat with timely flank charges. Thank you for a hard fought and very close match!

Aetius (Macedonians) defeats Stones1985 (Seleucids) 66-31

Much closer than the score shows, as many troops mass-routed at the very end. The Macedonians clumsily tried to go through a forest and rough area to get into a better fighting position, but this initially shredded their limited lights and other heavy units. Fortunately for the Macedonians, a mix of good fortune of some units holding and a long movement of some troops that eventually helped envelope the remaining Seleucids secured the victory. GG!

Aetius (Macedonians) defeats (Morat Romans) 41 - 15

The Macedonian line survived the impact charge of the Roman legions, and was able to surround and flank a few, eventually converging on the rest, although the legions put up a very tough fight until the end. GG!

Captainwaltersavage Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216-203 with Samnite

defeats

Morat Roman 105-25 plus Moorish

63:28

The Romans brought lots of legions and elephants. The Carthaginians wisely moved into rough ground and hills in front of their right flank with their medium troops and retreated in the centre. There was a lively skirmish in the hills between the Roman and Moorish skirmishers who were doing very well until the Carthaginian medium troops arrived and swept them away. Meanwhile the Carthaginian cavalry wing ran around on the left flank generally being annoying and crushing the Roman and Moorish cavalry with some loss but most survived intact. Eventually the infantry came to blows and the Carthaginians closed a trap on the Roman infantry rushing out of the trees and out of the nearby forests. Sometimes quantity beats quality and much like Cannae the cavalry raced across the battlefield to catch the legions in the rear to create enough chaos to disrupt the legions. Lots of Carthaginians fell but the legions finally collapsed. Not much time was left as the march to contact was very demanding.

Division B

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Bodhran Jewish 163-111 BC, 69-58

The Gallic forces deployed on the open area of field facing some high ground on its left and a small lake on its right but of the enemy all that could be seen was just a few light troops near the woods in the far distance. The Gauls advanced but as the `enemy remained hidden the option was either to remain in the open for an likely draw or push forward for a risky battle in and near the woods. Daunted, they nevertheless opted for the latter.

Over the next few turns they advanced with their light infantry leading to engage the enemy lights who were gradually reinforced as more of their light companions emerged from under their tree cover. As the Gallic lights were heavily outnumbered by now, the rest of the Gallic army closed up as quickly as possible, and the fighting moved into and beyond the first wood. The enemy lights were now reinforced by heavy cavalry and foot emerging from different directions from under their leafy cover. This clever play and timing, saw the Gallic cavalry overwhelmed by missiles and attacks and the warbands were equally disadvantaged by having to fight in the woods, or by multiple attacks as well as by the narrowness of the open corridors.

Arriving reinforcements finally included the medium Samnites and a couple of loose order warbands who being deployed on the Gallic left wing at the start had taken longer. This gave the Gauls a better chance of fighting in the woods and meanwhile a significant action was taking place in the open where the number of warbands engaged together with a flanking cavalry unit had an advantage against the opposing enemy - irregulars and zealots. Also a detached group of Jewish lights which had emerged late from the western wood was eventually defeated. The struggle had been long and fiercely contested throughout and it was only at the very end that the Gauls achieved a victory. Thanks to Bodran for a well fought and enjoyable battle.
