roguedjack, very cool, I've just played the Pyrrhus scenario (marginal victory as Pyrrhus on points.)
I like how diplomacy is abstracted in the game.
And thanks again for your "Rise of AI" mod from a few years ago.

I'm thinking about making a new campaign on the Peloponnesian War (whole or part thereof (then the Archidamian War part)). If anyone wants to collaborate, then that would be fun. :)

I'd be interested. I'd prefer if options included the whole war.

It would be interesting if an option could be added for naval encounters and fighting battles out with Mare Nostrum.

I asked about that and unfortunately naval encounters and battles are not included, only fleets moving armies.

Have played thru this once each as Roman, Pyrrhic, and Carthaginian.

Pyrrhic was pretty straightforward; batter the Romans into submission, then move on to take Syracuse.

Romans proved more challenging given the army list. I used allies to balance things out. The one issue was that, as I chased the surviving Pyrrhic force into the toe of Italy, they crossed the straits over into Sicily. I was unable to follow them. The Carthaginians proceeded to hunt down the survivors, and all I could do was diplomacy missions in Italy to expand my base. I could not launch diplomacy missions against any of the areas in Sicily, nor could I sail to Sicily and attack any of the ports, even when no army was present. Fortunately, the Carthaginians finished off the remnants of the Pyrrhic faction before time expired, so I scored a decisive victory in the end.

The Carthaginian is a waste of time, as you don't have a big enough force to deal with a fully empowered Pyrrhus. The AI immediately established a toehold via diplomacy and then rampaged across Sicily, completely ignoring the Roman bot rolling up its meager holdings in Italy.

An issue for all sides: the allies listed in the scenario are not always available in FOG2. It would be wise to review the options available in FOG2 and replace those offered in the game with viable alternatives.

What I would like to see added, if possible.

A naval option. At the minimum, an ability to raise fleets, which could be used for pillaging or attacking other fleets. Adding an option for using Mare Nostrum for battles would be neat as well. While Naval forces were not really a major factor in this scenario, they might be in others, so a naval addition would be valuable in those cases.

The ability to sail to a port that is not defended by an army. This would deal with the issue I faced playing the Romans.

The option to have more than just two field armies. While not so much an issue in this scenario, it might be in others.

The option to pay for general quality in an army. While not a factor when fighting battles in FOG, it would affect battles resolved by the game engine.

In any case, a really neat program, and I hope to see more scenarios available in the future.

Thanks,

After looking at the scenario file, I realized a few points.

1. The number of armies is configurable, so this can be adjusted as needed by an author.

2. It looks like the Romans are prohibited from entering Sicily, so that would explain my inability to do diplomacy or sail to spots in Sicily. That does make it a bit more random as to whether you can get a decisive victory, if Pyrrhus escapes to Sicily, as you're at the mercy of the Carthaginian bot to finish him off.

A bit more documentation on the variables available to scenario designers would be helpful.

This tool and the Pyrrhus scenario is based on the wonderful LITTLE WARS TV video campaign available HERE. The work and the videos that they have created are great: “Pyrrhus the Great” great!

Thanks for the feedback !

Actual fleets and sea zones are not on the todo-list for now, but I understand the appeal. Maybe for a future version.

When starting a scenario the "Scenario Rules" tabs are an important read. You can read them too ingame via the menu.
For the Pyrrhus scenario, it is my understanding that Rome & Carthage had an agreement not to interfere with each other (Carthage stays in Sicily and Rome in Italy). These restrictions are listed in the scenario rules tab.

For creating new scenarios, it would be very helpful to have a more complete and detailed list of the variables available. Looking at the scenario file included, there are variables for factions such as no seige train.

It would also be helpful to explain how the force point economy works: how much do you gain per zone you control, and whether this is affected by factors such as hostile or friendly.

What are the benefits of pillaging and what effects does it have on the zone? How long do these last?

Can you configure levels of city walls or is this just on or off?

Thanks

I agree the rules and scenario design documentation is lacking. Eventually there will be more detailled documentation. Some questions can be answered ingame by looking ingame at the tooltips and other texts.
Karvon wrote: It would also be helpful to explain how the force point economy works: how much do you gain per zone you control, and whether this is affected by factors such as hostile or friendly.
Base value is RP value of the zone. +50% if friendly, -50% if hostile. 0 if pillaged.
The tooltip of the factions RPs shows the values for each zone they control.
Karvon wrote: What are the benefits of pillaging and what effects does it have on the zone? How long do these last?
Most of the effects are described when you attempt a pillage action (see the action panel info after starting a pillage action) :
- Pillage can get the pillaging army loot (see the loot resolution table and the action description). An army with loot is always in supply (see the army tooltip info and the action description).
- Pillaging a Major City gains +1 momentum (see the momentum tooltip and the action description).
- A pillaged zone = no RPs and no FPs (see the faction RPs & FPs tooltips and the action description).
- A zone pillaged status last until the end of the next turn recruitment phase (see the recruitment phase log).
Karvon wrote: Can you configure levels of city walls or is this just on or off?
A true/false value (boolean) means its only on or off.

------

I'm working on an update of the game with improvements and more content.
Not sure I will have the time to include more detailled documentation in this update.

Appreciate your answers and understand about development as a one man fan effort.

I'm going to expand your original scenario a little, making it more free play and add a small northern expansion to reflect the potential threat from Eturia that led to one consul being sent north to deal with it I am going to strengthen the Carthaginians a little, so they aren't such a pushover. I'm going to make Syracuse an actual faction, giving them an army to contend with Carthage. I'm using ChatGPT to analyze the saved game files to get a better understanding of the mechanics and data used. If there's interest, I can post copies of those discussions.

I've also done some initial work on a Punic Wars scenario, but the map size is daunting. Not sure how quickly that will get cobbled together.

Thanks again for your work

I’ve put together a Second Punic War scenario (Rome or Carthage) that is more or less finalised and that I’ll publish in due course. But it requires the v1.1 of Campaigns of Glory to work.
