Division C

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats EdmondDantes Indian 320 AD-545 AD 51-25

The Lombards had faced many threats on their campaigns but nothing stirred terror like the threat of Elephants. Proven to panic horses and difficult to fight with cavalry weapons when the Lombards realised how many Elephants the Guptas could bring to face them fear spread through the ranks. To face this threat plans were hurriedly shifted. Rather than the mass of Lancers the Lombards had previously deployed they instead dismounted some of their cavalry to instead deploy as infantry. Levy reserves of foot archers normally only used as reserves or to defend the camp were instead hurriedly deployed to the battlefield in as great a number as could be mustered. The Lombard fears were soon realised as a great host of Elephants could be seen in front of them backed up by a mass of archers with Chariots, cavalry and close fighting infantry to support them though there was some relief that no artillery had been brought by their opponents. The Lombards had little choice but to split their anti Elephant forces to face the two groupings of Elephants the Indians had deployed leaving only a thin screen of redeployed Lancers to hold the centre. The Lombard left wing was able to overcome the Elephants and supporting archers relatively easily with only a few losses triggered by a panicked attempt by some cavalry to fall back triggering a fragmented unit of archers trapped in close combat with an Indian chariot to break as well. The Lombard right wing had much more difficulty. There were many more elephants deployed agaisnt them and they were better able to get into the Lombard Lancers who struggled to pull back from combat against the Elephants. The Elephants proved to be their own undoing as after Fragmenting one with a flank charge by some of the dismounted Lombard cavalry some plucky archers decided to try their own luck by charging the Elephant as well only for it to not only break itself but trigger a chain rout among most of the remaining Indian elephants still fighting. A few quick attacks to exploit this sudden and unexpected success forced the Indians to flee the field and the Lombards were left relieved that it could have gone so much worse if not for a great stroke of luck.

Chris Townsend Numidian or Moorish 55BC - 6AD with Roman defeat alexhstandish Indian 546-599 with Hephthalite 46-21

On a mostly open map, the Numidians lined up with their unmaneouverable infantry on the left, a line of irregulars spiced with Auxilia and Scutarii, and back by legions and elephants in the centre, and cavalry on their right, all screened by light javelin troops (foot in centre, horse on the flanks). In the long march from India, the horse clearly took the van, as there was no infantry (except skirmishers) in view at the start, a lot of horse, and five elephants, all arranged in front of the Numidian cavalry - who promptly recognized that the better part of valour was to retreat!

Gradually the Numidian infantry moved forward and right, and the Indian army spread out to meet them leading to a general engagement along the entire line, hinged on an Indian occupied village on their right and some small woods on the Numidian right. Somehow the Numidian javelinmen stood up to the repeated charges of the Indian flight horse, and that inspired enough of the Numidian irregulars to stand in front of the elephants long enough to deliver some flank attacks, and to surround some Indian lancers. When the Numidian infantry turned towards the remaining Indian left flank, it was time to call it a day.

Good game, and better luck next time!

Div B

alexhstandish (indian) defeats SgtOgre (Byzantine) 23:49

The Byzantines fielded a huge anti elephant phalanx of dismounted knights, legionaries and bow in one block. The Indians recognised the risk and sought to avoid the phalanx by sweeping round 90 degrees. The Indian right flank was successfully dealing with some lights and germanic knights until a lone unit of Byzantine knights (lowly ones at that) took a hand, hit a flank and proceeded to rout three units in an unstoppable chain reaction. The Indians had fortunately deployed an elephant unit and knights in support and managed to turn this flank.

On the left, the Indians avoided the spears and took out the Byzantine knights with their elephants and knights.

Thank you SgtOgre for a tough fight.

Div B

alexhstandish (Indian) defeats Cromlechi (Roman) 17:43

Both sides set up deep and narrow, at an angle across the battlefield. The Roman hid cavalry and camels in a wood to their right, and a mass of infantry in a forest to their left. They sent out a screen of LH.

The Indian allies chased off the enemy LH, and then flushed out the Roman Cav from their wood (the Indians suspected cav to be in the wood). The indians then finished off the Roman Cav with lancers and elephants.

Meanwhile the battle of the skirmishers continued with the numerous Roman lights trying to get shots on the |Indian elephants, who were screened as far as possible by Indian lights. Eventually the Roman infantry got into combat but fortunately for the Indians they had managed to largely isolate the legions and got elephants and lancers into the auxilleries.

Thanks you Cromlechi for a tough fight.
