Development update

With *Campagna d’Abissinia* and *Avanti per la Vittoria* now released, my focus has shifted to the third part of the series: *Eagles in the Sand*, the 1940–1941 campaign originally released last year.

This campaign will allow you to import your core army from *Avanti per la Vittoria*. Alternatively, players may begin the campaign with a preset army.

Most scenarios will also receive minor adjustments and refinements.

And a small equipment update with a fresh bunch of big unit icons.

And so I continue to take part, with my Italian legion, in the bloody Spanish Civil War! It’s a tough game, but really interesting!!! As usual, you can see more details in the screenshots and the replay!

Finished Guadalajara. Nice, though I expected a little more from the inevitable counterattack with the T-26s. Resources are actually plentiful, and the reinforcements are just a bit of a luxury. As long as you are careful with your artillery support and gang up on the Republican planes not named I-16 (these are untouchable) you'll be fine. The weather shifted perfectly from mud to clear just as I was in range of the counterattack. Had I been less prepared, that would have got me in the open, so nicely (or luckily?) done. I won on turn 21, so time limit is not an issue.

If there is a tweak to be done to make it more challenging at Normal/Normal it would be to beef up the front lines of the Republican with another gun or two. But it's not like they're badly resourced either - a careful human who doesn't outmarch his artillery should be fine at all times. Perhaps there are too many Nationalist bombers, you could cut one biplane to make them more even with the Republican (pre-I-16 and Ant-bomber reinforecment). But all these are minor, the scenario is good.

I get a strange effect in Santander. Regardless of what first move I perform, I get a Defeat at the end of Round 1.

I just re-downloaded exactly to avoid this possibility. But I did recycle the save, so I will try from the last Guadalajara turn again.

Yes, replaying the last Guadalajara turn and then proceding in the latest version solves it.

The **A-20** was an important Soviet prototype developed in the late 1930s as a possible replacement for the fast BT-series tanks. Designed under Mikhail Koshkin’s team at Kharkiv, it kept the older Soviet interest in convertible wheeled-and-tracked mobility, allowing it to run on wheels without tracks for road movement. It carried a 45 mm gun and used sloped armour, which marked a clear step toward more modern tank design. However, trials showed that the heavier tracked-only A-32 offered better growth potential while remaining mobile, and this line eventually led directly to the T-34. The A-20 therefore never entered production, but it was a crucial stepping stone in the evolution from fast cavalry tanks to the famous Soviet medium tank concept.

The **T-29** was an experimental Soviet medium tank of the mid-1930s, intended as a more advanced successor to the multi-turreted T-28. Like several Soviet designs of the period, it experimented with a complex wheeled-and-tracked drive system, combining high road speed with cross-country tracked mobility. The vehicle was ambitious, but also mechanically complicated and expensive, and its development history was troubled by changing requirements and technical difficulties. Although it did not become a major production tank, the T-29 was not a dead end: its suspension and running-gear ideas influenced later Soviet projects, and the experience gained by designers such as Koshkin helped shape the thinking behind the A-20 and the future T-34.

The **T-34M**, also known by the factory designation **A-43**, was a planned modernization of the early T-34 before the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It was intended to correct several weaknesses of the original T-34, especially poor crew ergonomics, limited visibility, and mechanical strain. Planned improvements included a better turret arrangement, a commander’s cupola, revised hull features, improved armour layout, and major changes to the engine, transmission, and suspension. By 1941 the design had moved beyond theory, with blueprints and components being prepared for production, but the outbreak of war forced Soviet industry to focus on mass-producing the existing T-34 instead. As a result, the T-34M was cancelled, but many of its ideas later reappeared in improved Soviet medium tank designs.

Santander. No issues. Turn limit and resources are plentiful for Normal/Normal. Perhaps one more Republican plane would make it a bit more of a challenge (but I have no idea if this would be historical). Nice scenario.

The Soviet soldiers turned out absolutely splendid! But until 1943, the Cossacks didn’t wear epaulettes – it was only the collaborators who served in the Wehrmacht and the SS who did.)

And so, the Reds’ last stronghold in this chapter has fallen! I really enjoyed this Italian chapter set in Spain! I also liked the fact that the AI and bots have learnt to mimic mass counter-attacks and try, as a crowd, to slow the advance and sometimes even recapture lost positions! Well done, Nico – it was certainly interesting to play. I think I’ll even carry on with *Eagles in the Sand* with my core group of veterans, even though I’ve played the earlier versions.

P.s.
I tried to start the chapter on Oryol, but for some reason my main Italian force from Spain hasn’t carried over into this chapter!?

Obviously I approve of what all these beautiful Soviet bigunits signify ;)

Meanwhile. Teruel. A bit of a slog, but not a problem for a methodical player. Turn limit and resources are plentiful.
