Mirror 2
Chris Townsend Egyptian 1200-1150 BC narrowly defeated DocVanNostrand Atropatene 144 BC - 226 AD by a score of 62-52
Unlike the mirror result previously posted, where the Egyptians also won, Doc had a plan for the Atropatene that could have worked. His cataphracts were kept concentrated behind a central hill, and were therefore able to get in their initial charge before taking any significant amounts of missile fire. Fortunately, despite being downhill from the charge, the Egyptian centre managed to hold on long enough that the Egyptian left flank could soundly defeat the Atropatane irregulars in the relative flat by the sea, and the Egyptian right could reengage after chasing down light cavalry. The cataphracts returned to the fray after their initial breakthrough, but were again delayed long enough by the remaining Egyptian infantry to allow the chariots and skirmishers to finished off the Atropatene infantry. A good, tense game!

principesromanes (Lombard 568-569 AD) beats rockmanbob123 (Portuguese 1050-1154 AD) 62-34
This game felt very similar to my game against ulysisgrunt - lancer armies facing knights on an almost empty field. Lots of room for the lancers to maneuver, but they still need to survive the impacts from the knights until they can get some flanks in.
In this instance, I shifted a line of lancers to gentle hill on the right. The knights charged uphill, and did eventually (more or less) win. But, crucially for my Lombards, the lancers on that hill could keep the opposing Portuguese knights engaged in an even numbers match up, leaving a superior number of lancers to (very awkwardly) swarm the remaining knights in the centre of the battlefield.
Interestingly, the Lombard light horse was almost completely useless - the nomad light horse stuck to knights after rear charges or got stuck in an allegedly favourable melee against light mounted crossbows, allowing knights to join the fray.
Thanks for the interesting little game.

Anticipating an army of enemy lancers, my Portuguese unsurprisingly took a lot of knights. The knights were, however, supported by a few units of crossbows and some defensive spearmen. Feeling outnumbered (although, as it turned out, only 5228 Lombards to the 5147 Portuguese - a difference of a light horse), the Portuguese sought to entice the enemy cavalry to approach a nice hill from which the crossbows could fire over the spearmen. It didn't work, and the enemy cavalry massed to swarm the flank, with some horse archers and light archers disrupting a Portuguese knight. So the Portuguese charged - supported though by some crossbow fire that weakened and disrupted some Lombard horsemen. And, rather like the mirror, this resulted in the Portuguese knights attacking up a hill. The Lombards never really found a vulnerable flank and were eventually ground down in the frontal melee by the better armoured (and bigger sword wielding) knights. Credit to the Lombard warband that held on to auto-break despite fighting two knights and a defensive spearman in the open. I don't think it ever even disrupted.
Thanks for the game!

Well put and agreed a very good, tense battle! I'm complete with my battles so wanted to also briefly say thanks to Karvon for organizing. A lot of fun, somehow only my first time in the Chaos tourney, but will definitely return!Chris Townsend wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2026 12:02 pm Mirror 2

Current Rankings
Mirror 2 has finished all games. Congrat's to DocVanNostrand for edging to a 1 pt victory!
Maeglyr secured 2nd place based on a higher total score in matches with Chris Townsend - but that was only 2 pts. So, really a photo finish for the division.

principesromanes (Serbian 1040-1319 AD) defeats ulysisgrunt (Venetian 1415-1439 AD) 66-27
On an open plane, the Serbs massed a mixed force of massed bowmen, defensive spearmen and lancers against the anticipated army of knights. And the Venetians did indeed bring an army of almost pure knights. The defensive spearmen held a semblance of a line, despite some casualties. The (marginally) more maneuverable lancers forced knights to spread out and allowed some crucial flanking. The bowmen, on the other hand, proved almost 100% useless against the heavily armoured late knights.
In the end, it was the spearmen anvil that provided enough opportunity for my lancers to find knightly flanks for me to take the field of battle.
It was interesting playing two fairly similar games with similar knight vs. lancer heavy armies against both ulysisgrunt and rockmanbob.
Thanks for the game!

Re: Chaos Tourney IX Results
Rockmanbob123(Khorasians) and Bagatrix1805 (germans) fought 24 turns to a dramatic draw with rockmanbob123 holding the field at the end 59-47. The Khorasians used their mobility advantage and a very helpful river to separate the german knights from their infantry almost achieving victory but ultimately running out of time.
