Mirror 2 Division

GeneralKostas Chris Townsend Welsh 600-1049 AD German (Feudal) 1450-1489 AD TW

Wellsh, this Welsh army list seems to be before they started using bows, let alone their feared longbow. And their cavalry lack lances (though two of five do have armour - the only available Welsh armoured units!). Fortunately, the Welsh side of the map had some woods behind each flank, and a lot of rough through the centre, so, after deploying maximum cavalry and javelin men, both generals deployed half of their Brythonic foot behind the rough, and half hidden in the woods (which fooled no one).

The differences appeared on the Germanic side where one general choose good quality troops (Xbow, heavy infantry and armoured cavalry) while the other went for a lot of poor quality troops (raw xbow, lesser men-at-arms and peasants), which at least had the "advantage" of being no worse in the rough. In the end, the more numerous but poorer quality Germans were the more successful.

Chris Townsend's Welsh defeated GeneralKostas's Germans 65-39
Chris Townsend's Germans defeated GeneralKostas's Welsh 44-8

Both good Chaos games!

The Crusader missile attacks and cavalry were able to inflict significant damage before the Thracians could bring their overwhelming infantry advantage to bear. GG!

rockmanbob123 lombards defeated ulysisgrunt Danish 66-53

The Lombard horse was on the verge of an early decisive victory 38-3 but the scrappy Danes were able to turn the tide and almost came back from a 35 percent early disadvantge.

Mirror 2 Division

Chris Townsend Bagatrix1805 English 1272-1319 AD Arab (Umayyad) 685-750 AD TW

The English brought their army of modern longbows and knights to an Arab desert and were sent packing. Their chosen battle field had a large rough topped hill with difficult sides between the lines, obscuring the view. But no one was surprised to see this sector allocated to the Arabs veteran Dailami, irregulars and massed bowmen. The opposing Irish foot and longbows had no chance. Defensive spearmen occupied the centre of the Arab line, doing reasonably well against Bagatrix's longbows, and even better against English spears. But the key difference between the two battles was the deployment of the cavalry. Bagatrix put a well balanced force on the semi-open Arab right flank, and demonstrated that it could pick apart longbows and Irishmen, even when they occupied rough terrain. Chris Townsend tried the same trick with an exclusively light cavalry force, which did some damage, but was comprehensively defeated, partly with the help of a few sergeants. Chris Townsend deployed a force of lancers on the Arab left, and was met by knights with sergeant support - the lancers outnumbered the knights 2:1, and that proved decisive. Chris Townsend's knights, also deployed on the open right, found the area behind the hill empty, and were highly paid spectators to the English defeat.

Results in numbers:
Arabs (Chris Townsend) defeat English (Bagatrix) 57-20
Arabs (Bagatrix) defeat English (Chris Townsend) 53- 4

Morale: If you are looking to defeat a technically inferior opponent, choose your battleground carefully.

Regular 1

Stew101 (Aragonese) defeats Karvon (Egyptian)

Score 41% to 6%.

Thanks for the game.

The game was heavily influenced by the close terrain. Lots of woods and rough terrain and a whole third of the field cut off by a river. This limited the Egyptian ability to use their bows on mass, whilst allowing the Aragonese to get their lancers into contact relatively intact.

My thanks to Karvon for running this comp again. Definitely my favourite.

DocVanNostrand Egyptian 1200-1150 BC defeated Chris Townsend Atropatene 144 BC - 226 AD A by a score of 40-15

The Egyptian chariots and archers were able to meaningfully soften the Atropatene Cataphracts with missile fire before engaging directly in close combat. As a result, the Egyptian line was able to withstand the initial charge and ultimately managed to encircle and decisively defeat the Atropatenes on the left. The battle was more even on the right, but together it was enough to trigger a rout. Good game to ChrisTownsend, as always

principesromanes (Cypriot 1320-1414 AD) draws Rosedelio (Andalusian 1050-1154 AD) 2-0

The Cypriots looked at the mass of Andalusian horse and shifted aggressively to their left, which occupied the tall hill and prevented the Andalusian cavalry making free use of the open space to the left of the copse of trees. The Andalusians, having left their bowmen at home, wisely declined to approach the hill. The Cypriots contemplated a concentrated charge off the hill at the Andalusian flank anchored on the small village, but the Andalusians wisely held just far enough back that the Cypriots declined to charge.

The generals agreed to call it a draw.

principesromanes (Latin Greece 1320-1432 AD) defeats Indibil (Alan 651-1049 AD) 40-10

On slightly broken terrain, the Alan horse archers, lancers, and bowmen lined up against a Latin force that was outnumbered in missiles and horse, despite taking everybody they could find who could hurl a projectile at the enemy. The Latin crossbows, however, proved a crucial advantage against the Alans, and an early chain charge by the knights on the Latin left significantly crippled the Alan cavalry. By the time the axemen were able to engage, the full force of the Latin missiles was able to soften them up. And there were knights and lancers ready to join the fray in the centre.

An interesting matchup where the Latin army kept concentrated enough to break the Alan lines before succumbing to the swarm of Alan missiles.

Thanks for the good game.

Mirror 1

principesromanes (Alan 651-1049 AD) defeats Indibil (Latin Greece 1320-1432 AD) 43-9

The Latin army massed with many knights on the righthand side of the field, supported by bowmen and a few lancers on left side of the field. While the Alan horse archers harassed the knights a bit, the bulk of the Alan army (being, of course, more horse archers) shifted to the left to address the troops supporting the Latin knights. The Byzantine lancers proved highly susceptible to arrows, while the massed archers and supporting lights were peppered with a volley of arrows and then charged. In an equal fight, the Alan horse archers may have been in trouble but their superior numbers were able to overwhelm the Latin archers before the knights could really catch any pesky horse archers. The axemen and irregular foot used the occasion spot of rough to significantly hinder the knights. The aftermath, featured below, is a bunch of scattered across the field knights finally catching a few Alan horse.

Thanks for the game.

principesromanes (Venetian 1415-1439 AD) defeats ulysisgrunt (Serbian 1040-1319 AD) 47-0

On a functionally empty plain, the Venetian army of knights supported by crossbows and cannons met a Serbian army comprised almost entirely of lancers with a few supporting horse archers. The lancers really didn't stand a chance in the cavalry charge. Softening them up with crossbows and cannon fire beforehand was both unfair and unnecessary.

Not a lot for tactics for this one, but it was a quick battle! And sometimes a one-sided knight smash is what the chaos tournament gives you!
