Aetius (Romans) defeats tyronec (Germans) 49-23

The Germans sent their lancers straight at the Romans, and it was a hard fight, but ultimately the combined Roman army managed to surround/rout enough to win the day. GG!

Aetius (Romans) defeats carpenkm (Palmyrans) 43-18

The Palmyran cataphracts and legions are tough, but the Romans managed to get to the soft underbelly of archers and that helped rout them. GG!

Div A

Karvon Ancient British defeated carpenkm Palmyran 258-273 43 - 17.

Battle was joined on a slightly wooded plain with the armies separated by a stream. Looking from left to right, a small woods lay in our far corner, a small woods and village were in our left/center section, a large wood lay in our center/right section, and another large woods lay in our far right corner. Not far beyond our central woods, the stream bisected a large, rough area. The far right sector was clogged with a pair of marshes and three medium woods surrounding a large rough area. On our left, the stream bisected another medium rough area. Another medium rough area and small woods were in the far left corner,

We deployed three warbands and a chariot on our left in the village and nearby woods. On our right, we hid the remainder of our warbands in the woods, screened by lights along the edges. A couple of chariot divisions were hidden in and behind the woods on the left as well. Some of our light horse and light foot were hidden in the woods on our far right. A few token light horse were out on each flank as scouts.

The Palmyrans deployed a loose line of legionnaires in the center, anchored on the woods on their left. Behind them was a large block of massed bow. In the rear was a large reserve of cataphracts. A few light screened the line, and a few light horse were out on their right flank.

Our plan was to sortie on our right, using the central large rough area to mask our left. Our lights would scout ahead to clear the woods and marshes supported by our warbands and chariots. Our left wing, we'd hold in reserve to sortie out after the Palmyrans completed their expected wheel to face our flanking move on their left.

The Palmyrans rolled forward, and we sortied out on our right. The Palmyrans had some lights and mediums hidden in the woods and marshes on their left, and these we quickly engaged with our lights, supported by our chariots and warbands. After a brisk series of fights, most of these were swept aside, and our chariots and light horse pursued the survivors and worked around the woods securing the enemy left. We dropped off a couple of warbands in the central rough to act as a delaying force, while the rest rushed on to support our flanking chariots and lights.

The Palmyans pivoted left, as expected, to confront our flanking attempt. Several legionnaires and cataphracts slowly attempted to encircle and crush our blocking force, but were hampered by the rough ground. We threw in a couple of chariots, disrupting some of these, which slowed them further, but eventually, they ground down our warbands and saw them off, though one did eventually rally when safely beyond their reach.

We sortied out of hiding on our left, with dismal results. While we did distract a few units, a couple of the warbands fragmented when we dropped back a bit. One of these then got run down by Roman horse and promptly fled with the horse in hot pursuit. The others we managed to get turned around and safely away without further mishap.

The decisive action was our flanking chariots and lights. These saw off nearly all the opposing lights and mediums and got into the masssed bow. We destroyed enough of them to break the spirit of the remaining Palmyans, and victory was ours.

Late reply, sorry all, but;

rpadilla1988 (Roman) defeats grahamed (Arab) 42-11

Battle lines drawn, the far northern flank of the Romans had some tricky spots with the Arab cavalry but disaster was averted.

rpadilla1988(Roman) defeats snooky51 (Bosporan) 46-0

Don't let the numbers fool you; I was lucky with terrain and rolls.. as well, I gambled some predictions on where to put what and that paid off.. was able to counter hard with lights hidden in woods at my right and they swung over to meet the enemy in the open; supported with my cav and infantry.. the main battle to the left was a serious hand fight.. though I had the high ground.

GG to both my opponents!

This game went to the 22nd round. I thought it a good tactical game with the strengths/disadvantages of each side being on display. Thanks to my opponent for making it a tough slog.

That's my last game of the season - thanks to all of my opponents for great games.

best, lydianed

Aetius (Romans) defeats random27 (Indians) 62-52

A hard battle where the Romans thought it wise to put their (supposedly) better medium in the forest on their left to ambush the Indians, but instead they were wiped out by a good mix of Indian lights and mediums. Luckily, the Roman right fared better, and we were able to get past the elephants to the juicy archers behind before they could take out a few more Roman units. GG!

The Nubians lined up well but their raw spearmen and archers could not compete with the skill of the Empire. GG!

Div A

Karvon Ancient British defeated random27 Indian 546 64 - 51.

Battle was joined on a tropical plain ringed by jungles in each corner section. A medium rough patch and a small pond on our far right near the center, further constricted options there.

We divided our force roughly in half, placing warbands in the woods on both flanks, screened by our light foot. On the more constricted right, we hid a division of chariots in and behind the woods and added a couple of LH to help secure the flank. On our left, we placed the bulk of our LH in hiding, in and behind the woods. We added two divisions of chariots behind the woods on our left.

The Indians deployed a massive block of bow in the center, screened by a few of their medium foot. Divisions of lancers and a pair of elephants covered each flank. Their LH was massed on the more open right flank, and they had a few LF in a loose screen.

With only a couple of our LH visible on each wing, the Indians cautiously pushed forward on each flank, dividing their force in two. Their lights came across ours, holding the fringes of the woods, and a skirmish ensued. They brought up their bowmen in support, and with their superior numbers, shot up our lights fairly quickly, despite having cover. We dropped back our disrupted lights through the woods to recover.

On our left, we sallied out with our LH and one division of chariots and drove back his lights. He shifted some lancers and an elephant to counter, driving our forces back, but exposing his to surrounding fire and envelopment from our chariots and warband hidden in the woods. We destroyed these, and he cautiously pushed some of his foot into the woods to counter. With our superior numbers still hidden, we surrounded and destroyed these as well. He attempted to push some lancers and an elephant around the right edge of the woods, only to encounter more of our hidden foot. We pinned and destroyed these probers as well.

On our right, things were a bit more bleak, as we were outnumbered and our skirmishers got the worst of it, thanks to the Indian numbers. By sticking to the woods, we marginalized his advantage in lancers and elephants. Our warbands got stuck into his foot and in a prolonged fight, got slowly ground down. We did see off a number of his foot and more adventurous mounted, and eventually he pulled back his survivors, leaving a couple of our warbands in control of the woods.

Our victorious left, swept across the field, taking out some of his worn-down foot and mounted, yet he managed to rally a couple of units to stave off collapse. However, just as night began to fall, our warbands surrounded and finished off his one heroic elephant and another beaten-up foot, and the Indians finally gave up and fled into the falling darkness.
