In a ancient desert, some scots sailors find a worthy foe. Lybians but good ol' times style !
Fluffy javelins, yes, but good swords, some horses, yes, but in a celtic way, on a chariot ! Good.
And men who don't fear the shock of steal against...euh...bronze. Good again.
First, a storm of arrow disorganized the ranks but scots seen worse in England. The massive formation of chariot attacking from the right was held in respect long enough to allow a pincer on the main formation of lybians.
Finally, praise the God RNG who maliciously deserted the adversary’s camp !

Solemnace's Libyan 1250BCE-651BCE defeated Ulysisgrunt's Ptolemaic 55BCE-30BCE 42-15
As soon as they arrived on the battlefield the Libyan commanders saw a large rough hill with high rocky sides. Instantly they directed their entire army to occupy it apart from a small force of chariots which were deployed elsewhere to distract their Hellenistic opponents and as such where swiflty driven off by Macedonian style Lancers. The Ptolemaic army was able to get some of their Thureophori and Thorakitai with supporting light foot onto the hill to oppose the Libyan Swordsmen and archers but were thrown back with heavy losses. Efforts by Roman Legionaries, Imitation legionaries and Thracian mercenaries with cavalry support to gain a foot hold on the hill against archer resistance were thrown back and the Ptolemaic army crumbled and fled.

Maeglyr - Indian (Rajput) 650-1049 AD defeats ulysisgrunt - Spartan 460-281 BC
43-10
A very very unfair match !Rajputs came from afar to compare their spears with those of the fierce Spartans.
The meeting took place in green hills and the Spartans managed to hold them for a while.
However, the hoplites failed to convince the Indians to stop galloping everywhere.
They charged the mounted lancers several times, bravely, but there was no other way out than painful exposed flanks.

Solemnace's Arab (Abbasid) 815CE-835CE defeats Maeglyr's Sassanid Persian 477CE-590CE 67-53
The Arabs brought Lancers supported by raw recruits, archers and light foot to counter the Perisan Horse Archers supported by Elephants. The Elephants caused significant damage before they were neutralized by Javelins and Bombs. Meanwhile the Lancers and Horse Archers swirled around the battlefield in a confusing Melee which eventually resulted in a close Arab Victory

Solemnace's Hittite 1275BCE-1180BCE defeats Bagatrix1805's Zagros Highlanders 2500BCE-1001BCE 48-15
Hittite Heavy Chariots smashed through the centre of the Zagrosian Line routing a number of units while the Hittite left composed partially of Gasgan warriors smashed apart the Zagrosian foot opposed to them aided by light chariots operating on the flank. The Zagrosian highlanders operating on their left did better pushing back Hittite Irregular foot and Syrian Spearmen who struggled to contain the Zagrosians impact foot but the battle had already been lost in the centre and the Hittite left.

Solemnace's Austrian 1200CE-1319CE defeats Indibil's Byzantine (Trebizond) 1400CE-1461CE 41-4
A number of high hills gave an excellent vantage point for Austrian crossbowmen and archers and the Trebizond Horse Archers made maneuvers to avoid the roughest ground and instead head toward the Austrian left where the ground was flatter and smoother. This put them close to a detachment of Austrian Horse archers and mounted Crossbowmen who the Trapezuntine cavalry engaged. However behind the screen of mounted missle troops lay a line of heavily Armored Austrian knight who surged out to engage the horse archers trapped in close quarters. Some fled the battle field while others were caught and cut down by the knights. Others were ripped to pieces by the arrows and bolts of nearby crossbowmen, foot archers and the mounted missle troops of the Austrians. Those Trapezuntines who instead headed towards the central hills suffered a similar fate of being cut to pieces by arrows and bolts. Only the Trapezuntine left had any luck where Austrian spearmen moved to engage Trapezuntine archers on rough ground. Some of these Spearmen were briefly routed by arrows while other spearmen engaged the archers on rough ground to little effect before the collapse of the Trapezuntine Horsemen forced the army to flee.

Maeglyr - Libyan 1250-651 BC defeats Solemnace - Scots (Isles and Highlands) 1050-1319 AD

Good game with lot of luck (for me, at least...) !The Libyan command decided to establish a tight line of swordmen, supported by some archers. On the front line, a large screen of light infantry, pushed by some chariots, ready to spread terror. To complete, a few chariots position themselves on the left to titillate some flanks and extend the enemy line.
The impact was violent. The left wing of Scotland broke quickly, allowing the chariots to insert themselves into the enemy’s system. They wreaked havoc and the whole of the enemy’s center and left wing was tarnished. The right wing played some time in a chase with the chariots to finally abandon the field.

Maeglyr - Scots 1052-1154 defeats GeneralKostas - Urartian 870-781 BC
32-0 - Surrender
A strong single line of Scottish infantry advanced without giving up towards the scattered positions of the Urartrians, composed mainly of a mix of archers and spearmen.
The right wing broke away from the rest to prevent the enemy’s numerous cavalry from attacking from the flank. It was a pleasant walk in the meadows, without contact. The left wing took over a swamp after some difficult beginnings.
The Urartrians's chariots attempted a frontal approach, but did not hold their own against the northern lances.
Finally, the Urartrian Commander-in-Chief, severely wounded during an engagement, decided to withdraw his army before suffering further casualties. The Scots let them go.

The Phoenician army arrived on the battlefield very confident. Ha! A horde of hastily armed peasants ?
We will sweep them with our chariots. It will be done quickly.
Well, no.
The Babylonian people, angry but organized, positioned their best elements at its center. These broke the Phoenician advance under a rain of arrows. The chariots of the aristocracy were mercilessly torn asunder. However, the right wing of the revolt did not achieve the same feat of strength and the fight was tougher.
The Babylonian weakness lay in its left wing, almost entirely composed of unequipped and untrained peasants.
They suffered countless losses.
The center of the Phoenician army reduced to nothing, it was its flanks that began a movement of pincers, very meager.
It was enough to obtain, on the knife’s edge, a victory.
A humiliating and inglorious victory.

Maeglyr - Urartrians 870-781 BC defeats GeneralKostas - Scots 1052-1154 AD

The Scottish heavy cavalry, confident, decided on a direct charge on the urartrian left wing, consisting of chariots, light and medium cavalry. They avoided the first charge and isolated the knights one by one, with the support of some mixed units ofspearmen & archers.
The Scottish centre was riddled with arrows by a formation in mini-pincers. The Scots, too confident in their armor, had kept a large rearguard who did not arrive in time to relieve the mortally wounded pikemen.
The urartrian right wing, hidden in a swamp, brought down the fierce highlanders and allowed a mixed chariot/cavalry formation to rout them.
For this time, mobility won.

Solemnace's Zagros Highlanders 2500BCE-1001BCE defeats Bagatrix1805's Hittite 1275BCE-1180BCE 64-53
The Lightly equipped Highlanders found themselves at a disadvantage against the Hittite host who were better equipped and also brought heavy chariots of differing types to smash through the irregular foot of the Zagrosians.Zagrosian generalship in the early stages however allowed them to gain an upper hand and eventually almost all of the Hittite infantry and archers were routed leaving only Hittite light foot, a single rallied unit of Gasgans, a poorly armed mob and the devestating chariots. Identifying the mob as the easiest target to force a Hittite retreat the Zagrosians raced their forces towards them but found themselves being picked off by the Hittite chariots and while they were able to kill one of them during this process it came at a high cost. However the Zagrosian foot eventually caught up with the Mob and routed them forcing the Hittites to abandon the field.

Solemnace's Order of St John 1450CE-1500CE defeats Karvon's Gallic 390BCE-301BCE 63-58
Very close game. The Crusaders started deploying on a hill with light foot out front on rough ground and archers behind spearmen with Knight to the left. The Gauls threw almost all there army onto the extreme right maneuvering around difficult hills to get the heavy foot units into combat while the Warriors took the rough hills as a shortcut. Eventually the Crusaders recognised the peril and began redploying their units but most of the knights had been cut down or driven off with only a single unit escaping by persuing off a Gallic Chariot. The Gallic horde swept around the right side of a small high hill to destroy the Crusaders in front of them taking out several units of spears, archers, artillery and Billmen, one whom rallied back repeatedly to keep the Crusaders in the game, but taking losses in the process losing units to flanks and determined resistance as they went. Some of the Crusaders missle units got around the side of the Gauls and onto the small rough hill they had swept around earlier so effectively both armies were facing the opposite direction to where they had started. The end finall came for the Gauls when two warband were routed in quick succession by missle fire and then melee before the Crusader General's unit of Raw Spearmen broke the warband they'd been in combat only to break simultaneously from the losses. At last forcing the Gauls to flee while the Crusaders licked their wounds.

Re: Chaos Tourney IX Results
Mirror Division 2 - Chris Townsend Solemnace Byzantine 740-903 AD Italian (Ghibelline) 1200-1319 AD TW
The map was mostly open, with some low hills on the Byzantine side. This twilight match was partly about technology (knightly lancers and crossbows for the Italians, trebuchet for the Byzantines), but it was also a match where there were options about quality versus quantity (raw troops available for both sides, Tagmatic vs. Thematic for Byzantine cavalry, and city versus full knights for the Italians).
As the Italians, I went for quantity, adding enough raw troops to cover the entire front line with a combination of spear and crossbow (including using Pavisier), backed by city knights behind each flank. The Byzantines generally went for quality, which meant their line was shorter. The Byzantine quality triumphed in the centre, but numbers told on both flanks and that was enough to decide the game in favour of Chris Townsend's Italians - 54-27
In the mirror, the Italians included some higher quality units (knights and armoured spearmen) to support a mainline well equipped with the latest technology (crossbows). The Byzantines maxed out on raw Skoutatoi and a smaller regular Skoutatoi force in the centre to allow a substantial Thematic cavalry force. On their right wing, the Byzantine horse archers did well against the knights until they were supported by infantry. On the left, the knights were well supported by crossbow from the beginning and did well but then were a little too enthusiastic in the pursuit. Meanwhile the Skoutatoi, with the benefit of the hill, managed to hold their own (well, the artillery was destroyed by light infantry) until cavalry could return on each flank resulting in an Italian collapse just before the knights could again make their mark. Final result was close until all Italian fragmented troops routed on the same turn - Chris Townsend's Byzantines won 62 - 48.
Good games!

Mirror Division 2 - Maeglyr Chris Townsend Berber (Almohad) 1121-1269 AD Numidian or Moorish 220-56 BC TW
This twilight match could almost have been geographically appropriate, and the terrain was flat and open, except for a bit of rough on each flank, and a woods behind one of the roughs. In this terrain, the shock and awe generated by the Numidian elephants was just not enough against the heavy spears of the Berbers, even when the elephants were supported by Phoenician style infantry. So, with two equal players, the result where:
Berbers (Chris) 40 defeat Numidians (Maeglyr) 60
Berbers (Maeglyr) 42 defeat Numidians (Chris) 60
So the combined match was a virtual draw. Good games!
