SPQR: March of the Eagles

Here is a rough overview of the current plans for the first Roman campaigns:

– First Punic War (264–241 BC)
– Second Punic War (218–201 BC)
– Roman campaigns in the Iberian Peninsula (197–133 BC)
– The Third Punic War (149–146 BC), possibly not as a full standalone campaign, but rather as a focused mission set or scenario within another campaign
– Macedonian Wars and Greece (214–133 BC)
– Gaul (58–51 BC) and Caesar’s expeditions to Britain

Wii we keep our legion(s) all along ? I know it's not the more realistic since first soldiers would be long gone and pre-Marius armies don't keep experience easily since they are disbanded as soon as a campaign is over ; but at the same time it could be cool to build our legions across the centuries, from Messana to Londinium

By the way, my first additional campaign for March of the Eagle is ready, I prepare a separate topic about it

I hope I'm not making a logical error, but the hastati and other Republican units disappear over time and new ones emerge, such as the early legionaries under Caesar. In the equipment file of a custom campaign, you can set these times variably. So if I deploy the hastati between 400 and 650 AUC, the first legionaries arrive shortly afterwards, with a slight overlap, from around 647 AUC. The units before that all disappear.

Now you'll have to wait in line because I'm playing Fantasy General, and until I finish, the Serbs and Romans can sit on the sidelines.

I thinks it's good like that.

But about keeping previous military organization for a few additional years, I don't think it's necessary. It's like in Rome Total War game : as soon as legionnaries are introduced, there is no point to keep obsolete units.

... Well in fact, there were reasons in RTW, armies in campaigns suddenly can't replenish and the transition towards legionnaries were annoying for a few turns, but that's another game system


An argument for, however : transition from a system to another is always slow and never immediate. So in an historic perspective, you could leave hastatis and friends for a few additional years.


Note : I think it shoud be wise to put legionnaries in the same "family tree" than other roman infantry. Cost transition will be minimal, and the player will not feel the change like a penalty.

I have almost finished the Etruscan units and am considering adding another cavalry unit. Two more Roman units will also be included in the next update: the Socii Extraordinarii and Vigiles will expand the pool.

Furthermore, I plan to give most factions access to new mercenary units, which will be slightly more expensive than native units and will have strengths and weaknesses.

As you can see, the Etruscans will not make it too easy for the Celts in the upcoming campaign.

I am also continuing to work on new city tiles and villages, but the results are not yet satisfactory and it is extremely time-consuming, but I am persevering.

I will design it in such a way that separating from the old units will bring enormous advantages. For example, there will be a switch for legionnaires that will allow them to switch from a normal formation to a testudo formation (also visually), which is characterised by significantly higher defence values but very low mobility. I have even more ideas buzzing around in my head in this regard.

I have already used this switch in Brennus, so the player actually has two units at their disposal if necessary, as in other mods where artillery can be switched to anti-tank defence in an emergency.

Just a suggestion, I don't know if it's doable or a better solution.

Wouldn't it be more suitable to place cities (without walls) in the "overlay" menu and walls (without nothing inside) in the "stations" menu, this would allow walls to be placed freely around city squares and don't force you to make cities with different wall section (that could save you some effort ) ?

Again, I have never made tiles and I have no idea if it is a better solution. I guess it could cause graphical problem.

I have already thought about designing something similar (like the hedges in the overlays). I haven't tried it yet, but it would probably be easier. I'll look into it when the time comes.

Is the translation correct? The translation is correct! And it's better to have some kind of translation, even if it sometimes has incorrect punctuation, than no translation at all!!! )))

Hehe, unfortunately I just don't trust AI for most work
I used it to translate french text towards english for some of my MC contents previsously, I found it so over the top and ridiculous in its translation that I decided to just make "man-made" english content

The city walls will have to wait a little longer, but I have designed a few more city tiles and statues to add some variety to the city design. It takes a bit of experimentation to make it look antique and visually appealing.
